Society Sees Films
Of Early Settlers
Yreka - Approximately 80
members and guests attended
the meeting of the Siskiyou
County Historical society
June 8 at the museum.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Meam
ber showed slides of the old
buildings and settlers of Shas
ta valley. The pictures began
with the route the Hudson
bay trappers entered the val
ley. Mrs. Meamber gave a
commentary covering the his
tory of the time.
Among the pictures were
old flour mills, opera house,
restaurants and saloons.
Young's Candy store, and
Harts' Butcher shop. One pic
ture was of the Montague de
pot with a car load of wagons
in 1898.
There were also pictures of
the church, still used, which
was built in 1802, baseball
teams and members of the
Montague band in their uni
forms with their red band
wagon, picnic pictures, old
autos and ona watermelon
steeling party.
Museum Report
The curator reported 700
visitors for the month of May;
70 school children from Duns-
mulr made a tour and SO
third grade youngsters from
Yreka.
Mrs. Pollock exhibited
pattern of an arrowhead made
of obsidian with Jong curv
ing point which was very
rare, found by a party belong
ing to a Rock society. They
also found pine beads made
of seeds, obsidian spear points
and other artifacts such as
abalone shell spoons and dish
es used by the Indians.
A letter was read from a
boy attending Wheatland
school telling of a project to
rebuild the old Wells Fargo
building at Timbucktu, near
Grass Valley. Ha asked for
rock or brick from any his
torical building in Siskiyou
county to place in the wall.
Mrs. Pollock said two bricks
from the recently dismantled
old Fire hall were sent. '

since the last meeting.
Theo Terwllliger, Hayward,
was given a honorary life
membership in the Siskiyou
County Historical society for
his work and time donated to
the society and Siskiyou real'
dents visiting the southern
part ox the state.
Tha next field trip will be
in September and will take
the group on a tour of the
Hearst Castle in McCloud.
Mrs. Schraeder of Mt. Shas
ta reported that the Heirloom
group would meet June 26 in
the evening at the Methodist
church in Mt. Shasta. The
Oneida Silver company will
have on display many silver
place settings both for formal
and informal serving.
Refreshments were served
at the close of the meeting by
the committee.
