It was likely the Defense
Department official would be
questioned about the basis for
his decision to award the con
tract to Bell Aerosystems Co.
over the Douglas Aircraft Co.
which the Navy favored.
The Defense Department's
director of research and engi
neer, Dr. Harold Brown,' has
told the committee that Gii
patric's decision was based on
relevant past experience of
the two companies and their
past performance.
He said Bell had built sev
eral vertical taxe - off proto
types and a wide variety of
helicopters while Douglas had
little experience in vertical
rising planes.
