Social Security
Seek Name Changes
If marriage changes your
name, you should also
change your name on your
social security account. Ed
ward B. Jacobson, district
manager of social security,
points out that a change of
name requires the issuance
of a corrected social security
card.
The same account number
Is kept, but the card is issued
in the bride's new name. Im
mediate reporting by the
bride will lessen the possibil
ity that her future earnings
may be incorrectly reported
Jacobson said, "If you're
married and haven't yet
changed your name on your
social security account, do so
immediately. If you are just
planning marriage, be sure to
notify the Social Security ad
ministration after the mar
riage takes place."
The local office at 1017
North Riverside ave., will
mail the necessary form for
the change of name. The com
pletion of this form takes
only a minute and may save
a great deal of confusion
some time in the future, Ja
cobson said.
Irrigation District
May Add to Area
Eagle Point The Eagle
Point Irrigation district may
be able to add about 2,000
acres to the regular irrigation
assessment roll, its board of
directors announced this
week.
Questionnaires and preli
minary applications are be
ing sent out to a number of
potential water- users. By
completing the question
naires, potential water-users
would not be under any obli
gation to the district. It will
be used only as a guide. After
the returned forms are evalu
ated, applicants will be noti
fied of the district's next
steps.
The questionnaires specify
acres of dry land each appli
cant asks to have included,
number of acres of water
sales lands to be placed on
the assessment roll, whether
the landowner agrees to pay
a $32.50 per irrigated acre
entrance fee and how he
would pay this.
Deadline for returning all
forms is June 17. The form
was authorized by the board
at its regular meeting June 4.

Budget Cut Hinted
For Space Agency
Washington-IUPD-The House
Space Committee will recom
mend cuts of nearly S500
million in the administra
tion's request for S5.7 billion
for the civilian space pro
gram next year.
As it now stands, the com
mittee will approve a spend
ing ceiling for the federal
space agency of just under
$5.2 billion.
A check with the three
subcommittees of the space
committee today revealed
that 'the reductions probably
will range from $488 million
to $498 million.
There is a chance the full
committee will revise some
of the figures, but this ap
pears unlikely.
The space committee acts
on the spending authoriza
tion. The appropriations com
mittee must still recommend
the actual amount of money
to be voted by the House.
The same procedure applies
in the Senate, where the
space committee began hear
ings on the authorization bill
this week. , -
Teamster Leader
Declared Guilty
Newark, N.J. tUPD Asst.
U.S. Atty. Richard Levin said
Wednesday the conviction of
Teamster leader Anthony
(Tony Pro) Provenzano, was
a victory for the Justice De
partment in its war against
labor racketeers.
"The door has been
opened," said the 31-year-old
lawyer who served as co-counsel
with Matthew Boyland in
Provenzano's trial. Levin said
the conviction could lead the
way to the conviction of other
Teamster union officials.
Provenzano was found guil
ty Tuesday night by a federal
court jury of extorting $17,
100 from Dorn Transporta
tion, Inc., Rensselaer, N. Y.,
in return for labor peace.

Hatfield Pressured To Sign or Veto Various Measures
Br ZAN STARK
Salem -CP- Pressure to
approve or reject measures
approved by the 1963 legisla
ture is now
focused on the
governor's of
fice. The gov
ernor's staff is
buried under
an avalanche
of telegrams,
telephone
calls, letters
and personal
surk visits.
During the record 141-day
session, the legislature ap-
proved about 650 measures.
While the session was on, the
governor had five days in
which to take action.
Gov. Mark Hatfield now
has until June 26 - 20 days
not including Sundays after
the end of the session - to act.
He already has vetoed two
bills, and let five become law
without signature.
By mid-Wednesday he had
signed 485 measures.
He still has about 165 on
which to act.
e e .
Hatfield has three choices.
He can veto a bill, he can
sign it, or he can file it with
out signature with the secre
tary of state.
There is na '"pocket veto"
in Oregon. The governor has
to veto a measure to kill It.
If he signs a measure, or files
it with the secretary of state
without sisnature, it becomes
law.
Bills without the emergen
cy clause or a special effec
tive date become law on Sept.
2, tne 90th day after the legis
lature's adjournment.
Warne Nunn, Hatfield's ex
ecutive assistant; Travis Cross,
the governor's press secretary,
and legal counsel Loren Hicks
are now wading through the
bills.
Nunn and Cross keep track
of the phone calls, letters and
telegrams, and attempt to
schedule appointments for
those who want to talk to
the governor.
e
Hicks is making a last legal
review and complete sum
mary of the bills. He prepares
a statement for and against
each measure before it is sent
on to the governor's desk tor
final consideration.
It's a slow process. The leg
islature adjourned ten days until June 26. the legal dead
ago, but some TT bills still line for aetion.

While the legislature wasi
in session, the individual law-
makers took the brunt of tob-
bying for and against various j
proposals. '
