Corvallis - (UFD - The State
Board of Higher Education
has moved to soothe fears and
hard feelings touched off
when the legislature author
ized the transfer of patients
from the University of Oregon
Tuberculosis Hospital at Port
land to the State Tuberculo
sis Hospital at Salem.
Chancellor Roy E. Lieuallen
promised the physical trans
fer of the patients would come
on a timetable based on their
health and welfare. He prom
ised "nothing less than the
best that can be provided."
The board gave the Medi
cal School responsibility for
the move and indicated that a
physician would be named ad
ministrator of the Salem hos
pital. That hospital fell under
the board's control in a last
day compromise at the legis
lature. Presidents of four schools
predicted differing effects
from the raising of tuition
fees for out-of-state students.

stantial decrease in the num
ber of out-of-state students.
President Branford Millar of
Portland State said the in
crease would have little ef
fect on his enrollment, while

was too early to tell how it
would affect their schools.
Lieuallen announced the
state system and its schools re
ceived $29,504,876 in gifts and
grants in the 1961-63 bien-nium.
Board members were told
that the member schools were
eliminating many smaller
classes to save money. Lieu
allen reported a 14 per cent
reduction in the number of
classes having less than 10
students last year.
The board also approved ao

Over the White
Cliffs of Dover
Dover, England - (DPD - The
profit motive has reared its
head over the white cliffs of i
Dover and the people here
think it's "just not right."
It all began when the Do
ver corporation, as the city
government here is known,
began receiving requests from
the United States for small
pieces of the famed chalk
cliffs.
Chunk by chunk, the cor
poration began chipping bits
off this tight little island and
sending them to the New
World to adorn somebody's
mantle.
But the chunks were so
small and the cliffs are so big
- rising to 300 feet in places
and running for miles along
the English channel - that
there was no immediate dan
ger of running out.
Gave Away
Besides, the corporation
gave the chunks away free,
charging only postage and
donating any payment that
people happened to send
along to the Dover Old Peo
ple's fund.
But then the "Admiral's
Eye," a London gift and sou
venir shop, began selling elite
chunks as big as a soccer
ball for a halt crown (35
cents).
"Commercialization at Its
very worst" a. corporation
spokesman thundered. "It just
isn't the right sort of thing to
take money for something
that has. sentimental value
only."
"Well, we're just a com
mercial firm," answered Alex
Lynes, owner of the "Ad
miral's Eye," so called be-
cause it's within sight of the
Lord Nelson statue in Trafal
gar square.
"We wouldn't be In busi
ness for long if we gave this
stuff away for free. We've
got all other sort of things.
There are bottles of pure
English country air, a vial of
London fog - the real thing,
mind you - and we've even
cot statues of Sir Winston
Churchill that blows smoke
as you put a match to their
cigars."
Lynes said he gets his chalk
chunks from a Dover customs
inspector who picks them up
on the beach as he goes to
work.
Is this legal? The Dover
corporation said it was, al
though "we are considering
a protest."
Chunks Anywhere
"Most of the chalk cliffs
are owned by somebody," the
spokesman said, "but there
are chunks on the beach,
chunks by the railroad line,
chunks by the roadway,
chunks all over the hills near
Dover, chunks anywhere.
Really, anybody can come
along and take away some
chalk, if they really want to."
The spokesman said the Do
ver corporation so far has a
corner on one tourist market
- English channel see water.
"There was one man, a Mr.
James Baxter in Rcnton,
Wash., who wrote for a bot
tle of channel water to dump
into his swimming pool," the
spokesman chuckled. "It got
into the newspapers that Mr.
Baxter wanted to fill his
1 whole pool with the water
and we've been getting re
nuests ever since. Most of
them come from America.

Nuclear Machine Aids Battle Against Cancer

scaled down version of a
machine used in nuclear re
search has turned out to be a
valuable tool in the battle
against cancer.
After seven years of hos
pital use and treatment of 1,
500 patients, Stanford univer
sity's medical linear acceler
ator has gone into commercial
production by the Palo Alto
electronics firm of Varian as
sociates. Two commercial models
worth $150,000 each are in
service at the Sanford Medi
cal center and the University
of California Medical center
at Los Angeles.
For patients afflicted with
certain types of cancer, the
medical accelerator can mean
more effective and more com
fortable radiation treatment
than that provided by older
methods.
It has led to "real advanc-

tumors of the lymphoid tissues.
However, he said, the ac
celerator is not necessarily
suitable for treatment of all
types of cancer, and thus
Stanford accepts patients only
on referral from their own
physicians.
The medical accelerator is
a smaller version of the uni
versity's one billion electron
volt machine used in nuclear
research. It also is a relative
of the two-mile long linear
accelerator now under con
struction on the Stanford ,
campus for the federal gov
