thin mountain air was hushed
with the expectancy ol an
Ozark evening turning to
night. Then the deep boom of
bells sounded from the tower
of the sandstone monastery on
the hill.
For more than 85 years, the
bells have called priests and
brothers of the Order of St.
Benedict to hours of prayer,
work and study. Since New
Subiaco Abbey was founded
In 1878, the cluster of red
roofed buildings has been a
world of its own to its inhabi
tants. Hundreds of monks have
walked the cool, dim hallways
of the quiet monastery in
prayerful meditation.
Rule Prasctlbad
Following rules prescribed
by their order's founder, si.
Benedict, who established his
first monastery at Subiaco,
Italy, early in the sixth cen
tury, the monks have had lit
tle contact with the ouUide
world.
, In the lush fields of the
Abbey's 1.500 acres, brothers
planted, tended and harvested
crops for their tables. Their
saw mill sliced lumber for
buildings and repairs; from
their stone quarry they carved
native sandstone for further
expansion.
Their dairy and beef cattle
yielded milk, cheese and fine
beef for their kitchens; hog
and poultry stock provided
pork, eggs and meals of
chicken.
In the shadow of the four
story, quadrangle-shaped main
building, the Benedictine
priests taught boys and young
men in the Abbey Academy,
or high school, and in the
Scholasticate for seminarians,
Small Numbers

come to the monastery in
small numbers - mainly fami
lies ot monks and students.

A modern, $500,000 retreat
and guest house cradled on
the side of the abbey hill was
dedicated April 28, climaxing
more than two years con
struction work and "many
years of dreams," Father Mi
chael said. The 40-room build
ing will accommodate targe
retreat groups as well as rela
tives and friends.
The guest house, named for
Miami, Fla., patron George
Coury, was constructed, like
other abbey buildings, of
sandstone, native oak and
pine timber taken from sur
rounding acres. Benedictine
brothers worked side by side
with construction men to get
the job done.
Oldest In South
Subiaco Abbey, one of
about 275 Benedictine- rrsor.a:
terics in the world and the
oldest one in the Deep South,
boasts one of the most modern
churches in the Arkansas dio
cese. Consecrated In April,
1950, the huge church is the
tocale point in the lives of the
abbey's a p p r o x I mately 60
priests, 30 brothers, 300 stu
I dents and seminarians and
half-dozen sisters.
One enters the church
through tall oak doors and is
confronted by a view of a
huge crucifix suspended over
a marble altar. The gleaming
cross hangs from a dome
shaped canopy covered with
gold leaf and supported by
four. 16-foot pillars of Bot
ticlno marble from Germany.
Immediately behind the
main altar are choir stalls -40
on each side of the Sacris
ty, facing each other - where
the priests sit to chant back
and forth during services. The
church has 18 altars, a chapel

Congress Asked To Add Funds for Oregon Projects

Hatfield has asked that Con
gress add (721,000 to Presi
dent Kennedy's budget for
navigation projects in Oregon.
Thomas J. Murray, port
consultant to the state, made
the request during a brief ap
pearance before the House
Public Works Appropriations
subcommittee.
He said Hatfield supported
budgeted navigation projects
totaling $4,311,000, but also
recommended addition of
funds for seven projects.
The additions would include
$545,000 for a deeper naviga
tion channel in the Coos and
Millicoma rivers, which Mur
ray said would result in big
savings to lumber mill oper
ators. Would Speed Projects
Murray said approval of
planning funds for a project
to deepen the Willamette riv
er and to resume planning on
the Willamette River Falls
lock project would expedite
construction of the authorized
projects. The amounts re
quested for the two projects
were $46,000 and $85,000.
Other additions requested
by Oregon officials included:
-$2,000 to begin a review
study for a barge channel and
protective works where Her
man creek enters the Colum
bia river.
-$19,000 to begin planning
of a barge channel at Colum
bia Slough.
-$3,000. to begin a review
study of the Charleston small
boat basin.
-$21,000 to plan modifica
tion of bar and channel depths
on the Siuslaw river and bar.

mook county asked that $1.1
million be appropriated to
complete major rehabilitation
of the Tillamook north jetty.
