Josephine County
Board Asks for
Building Code
Grants Pass-The Josephine
county board of commission
ers has recommended that
the county planning commis
sion set up a building code for
the county's rural areas. The
proposed code would go into
effect July 1, 1964.
In a letter presented rec
ently to the planning commis
sion, the board emphasized
the code would apply "only
to those structures which are
Intended to be used as per
manent homes, hotels, motels,
eating and meeting places
used by the public, and would
include churches, auditoriums
and theaters.
County Planning Officer
Virgil Adams said this indi
cated that the new restric
tions would not apply to oth
er buildings such as' farm
structures, summer homes,
commercial and industrial
properties not used by the
public, or forestry or logging
structures.
The board expressed the be
lief that the health, safety and
general welfare of Josephine
county would be better pro
tected by the setting up of a
rural building code. It was in
dicated that a proposed coun
ty building inspector might
also handle septic tank and
drain field Installation inspec
tions in keeping with state
regulations, thus giving the
county sanitarian more time
for matters of general health
throughout the county.
