Myers D. Jones revealed
the results of a survey which
his committee had conducted
some time ago to determine
why air travel was "falling
off" locally.
Jones said thai a question
naire was compiled and
mailed to about 500 business
men in the valley who might
have occasion to travel by air
during the year. Some 228 re
plies were received.
The results showed that the

average firm used a commer
cial airline 8.24 times a year.
Portland was listed as the
most frequent destination to
the north, and San Francis
co drew most of the travelers
to the south. Most respond
ents expressed a desire for
scheduling of early morning
flights both incoming and
outgoing to the north and
south.
Frequency Noted
Seven ty-lhroe businessmen
indicated they were using
commercial air travel more
than they did two years ago,
but 101 said they were not
flying any more often. Thirty-
four said they were flying
less now than they did two
years ago, while 63 indicated
they were not flying less frequently.
In the space provided on
the questionaires for com
ments, Jones reported, there
was "some feeling expressed
of being provided wtih sec
ond class service while being
charged a first class price."
Subsequently, the commit
tee held meetings with repre
sentatives of the three com
mercial airlines serving Med-
ford, Jones said, and the re
sults of the survey were discussed.
The committee chairman
said on the basis of the talks,
West Coast, United and Pa
cific airlines have "improved
their schedules," agreed to
give the committee notice
prior to any future schedule
adjustments and have insti
tuted family plan fares seven
days a week.
Jones said his committee
"feels it has a lot still to do."
He said the group wants to
take steps to "dress up" the
airport, to improve the tie
down facilities, and to put up
signs welcoming in-coming
travelers. Further, he said,
the committee intends to in
vestigate city-tenant relations
at the airport, fire protection
facilities and future needs
for runway length and clear
area.
District Sales Manager L
W. Rostad noted that this is
the fifth year that turbo-jets
have operated in the United
States and that the craft now
carry three-fourths of the
entire movement of air tra
velers. He recalled that West
Coast had brought the first
jet to Medford in September,
1958.
Rostad said that 1962 was
the third lowest year In his
tory in terms of fatality rates
in air travel, with only one
death for every 100 million
air miles flown.
Air travel fares, Rostad
said, are the consumer's "best
buy."
"As other prices rise, he
said, "air travel fares go
down." I
He noted in particular that , rates. . That boardings have
the United States airlines have
the lowest rates in any coun
try in the world. He pointed
out, too, that the ten per cent
federal transportation tax, in
stituted during World War II
to discourage civilian sir tra
vel, was reduced to five per
cent in 1962.
Rostad said that the 13 lo
cal service airlines in the
country made a profit last,
year, proving the point that
"local air service is needed." I
The federal subsidy on local !
carriers has been ' reduced j
from one-half ten years ago 1
to one-third today.
"We hope to be able to end
the subsidization entirely in
about another 10 years," he
said.
Economical Rates
Rostad said that surveys
have revealed that 65 per cent
of the American people' don't
fly. Current thinking is that
if more economical rates
were introduced, additional
people might be Induced to
travel by air, he said. He
pointed out that West Coast
has reduced its fare to San
Francisco by $12 and has cut
the fare to Portland from $38
to $29.
He said his firm is now
"sales minded," and will op
erate on the premise that vol
ume sales will offset income
lost through the "' reduced
almost doubled" at the Med
ford airport in the last
month, bear out his theory,
Rostad said.
He said he expects his
firm's plans to merge with
Pacific to be successful with
in a year or so. Negotiations
are currently under way be
tween the two airlines,
