owners, you think more about
fertilizing and spraying for
weeds than about this impor
tant cultural practice. Proper
watering will produce a much
better turf in your lawn.
If you are not watering
properly you are then apply
ing too much water or water
ing too frequently and too
lightly. Too much water will
cause a loss of plant food by
leaching and will encourage
shallow rooting of the grasses.
Frequent light waterings will
encourage shallow root spe
cies such as annual bluegrass
and other weeds to grow and
will bring about drought sus
ceptibility. How To Check
The best way to determine
when to water is to examine
the soil for moisture content.
Remove a plug of soil with a
knife, soil tube or shovel. If
the soil is wet in the upper
two inches delay sprinkling
for a day or two then re-examine
the soil. When water
is needed wet the soil to the
effective rooting depth of the
grass. This is usually about
eight inches, but this depth
will vary considerably with
the soil type and soil depth.
A sandy loam soil over eight
inches deep will maintain
grass for seven to 12 days
without watering. A granite
soil or shallow soil may re
quire watering every three
days during the hotter weath
er. A sprinkler that applies
water at a slow rate may be
necessary to wet a heavy soil
to the proper depth without
having surface run off.
An important part of deter
mining watering practices is
to consider the needs of water
by the grass. During the sum
mer months the grass will not
use more than a inch of wa
ter daily. If this figure is used
as an index then 1 inches
of water would be the maxi
mum amount needed per
week.
To check your lawn sprin
klers for output, place coffee
can or other flat-bottomed
containers wi.i, verticle walls
in the sprinkler pattern. At
the end of the normal sprin
kling time, measure the
amount of water in the con
tainer and this will tell you
how much water was applied.
Dry Spots
Dry spots may occur in the
lawn because of a heavy com
pacted soil, steep ground, mat
ted turf grass or a poor dis
tribution of sprinkler water.
If dry spots occur examine
the area for compaction and
a matted turf. These condi
tions can be corrected by the
use of an aerator or verti cut
mower' respectively. This

Air Conditioning
Deferment Urged
Corvallis - d'PD - Chancellor
Roy Lieuallen of the State
System of Higher Education
Monday recommended "defer
ment" of air conditioning
equipment for several new
campus buildings.
Lieuallen recommended the
deferment for new buildings
at ' Oregon State, Southern
Oregon college in Ashland,
Eastern Oregon college in La
Grande and Oregon College of
Education in Monmouth.
Allan Hart, Portland, mem
ber of the board's building
committee, said he was not
changing his earlier view that
air conditioning was a desir
able program. "But, it is
something we can defer," he
said.
Lieuallen estimated con
struction costs would be re
duced $220,000 by not instal
ling air conditioning.

Dendrometers Used
To Check Growth
Dendrometers devices to
measure radial trunk growth
are appearing in Oregon
fruit orchards and may prove
valuable in determining irri
gation schedules and cover
crop practices, reports Robert
L. Stebbins, Oregon State
university extension horticulturist.
A dendrometer is attached
to the tree trunk and meas
ures to within 15.000 of an
inch the growth of the trunk.
This Is significant because
studies have shown the trunk
to be the most sensitive part
of the tree to moisture
changes, Stebbins explained.
Both Oregon state staff
members and Oregon or
chardists are currently using
these sensitive devices de
veloped at the University of
Idaho. Stebbins believes the
possibilities of dendrometers
in research work are Just
being tapped.
Extension specialists are
using dendrometers on dem
onstration plots in Union
county to determine the best
cover cropping practices for
stopping erosion, Stebbins
said. The fine measurement is
one way of showing differ
ences on plots being studied.
Stebbins and Marvin Shear
er, OSU extension irrigation
specialist, are using dendro
meters on a second experi
mental plot . in the Milton-
Freewater area in an effort
to determine If the number of
orchard Irrigations can be
reduced.
Why clutter up your modern home with
furnaces, flues, vents, fuel tanks, pipes?
If clean-as-light electric energy provides per
fect, draft free comfort . . why bring fire
inside your home and with it fumes, odors,
and messy flame by-products?
If you can install an electric heating system

requires almost no cleaning, maintenance, and
repairs . . . why add these costs to your
annual heating bill?

A "wet plot" which Is wat
ered frequently to maintain
moisture at all times is being
compared against a "dry plot"
where trunk growth - is al
lowed to drop to 80 per cent
of those In the "wet plot" be
fore irrigation. This test was
started in April.
Shearer also has been
working with commercial or
chardists in other parts of the
state on their irrigation pro
grams. Some growers have
bought dendrometers and are
currently studying their use.
Dendrometers are not yet
in extensive use anywhere,
Stebbins explained.
Although Stebbins is hope
ful that dendrometers may
show orchardists how to save
time, money and water
through reduced irrigation,
he also notes that the devices
have some limitations in
their use.
Dendrometers do not work
as well on slow-growing old
trees, which don t quickly re
flect changes, as on young
prime trees. Soils also enter
the picture because the rate
of moisture use varies with
the soil type.
Dendrometers may not be
feasible either for use in or
chards where the grower, be
cause of water limits, has lit
tie or no choice as to when he
will Irrigate. Another limit
seen by the specialist is the
timing of spray applications.
The orchard has to be dry to
get the spray equipment
through.
Stebbins recommends that
growers who are Interested In
dendrometers and their use
write to the College of Agri
culture at the University of
Idaho in Moscow and request
a copy of the bulletin entitled
Trunk Growth as a Guide In
Orchard Irrigation."

Suggestions Given
On Home Shrub,
Tree Planting
Corvallis - Trees and
shrubs with their Individual
characteristics are best hand
led like people - use discre
tion in combining types for
an overall hnrmonlous ef
fect.
Donald J. Martcl, head of
the landscape architecture de
partment at Oregon State uni
versity, suggests that garden
ers observe the structural
qualities of plants at all sea
sons for best use in tho landscape.
Generally, plants of similar
structural characteristics look
best if used together. For ex
ample, the heaths and heath
ers, mahonia and ferns, Japan
Fatsia, and David Viburnum.
Low growing skimmia and
ajuga, with their similar tex
tures, also complement one
another, rlants should cre
ate a single expression and
not compete for attention. Un
pleasant combinations Martel
has noted include Strawberry
Madrono and Escallonia, Fat-
shedcra and broom.
Some trees such as Sargent
Cherry and Shore Pine have
a definite ascending charac
ter. Those that are descending
tend to draw the eye toward
the ground. These Include
pendulous Appleblossom
Weeping Cherry, Escallonia
and Crabapplc. Martcl cau
tions against combinations of
two strong opposite forms to
gether in the garden. They
tend to negate each other.
Structural qualities of some
plunts vary from season to
season. The silk tree in sum
mer has . a slightly arching
character. In winter, it's
very ascending. Rhododen
drons as they bloom are as
cending, in winter they're
pendulous.

Stat Farm Forester
Life is full of many well
understood things, but it Is
also full of many misconcep
tions. One of these miscon
ceptions Is the profession of
forestry.
For years, people have
thought of a forester as a for
est fire fighter, a fire lookout
on a tower, or a man with a
big western style hat on a
white horse. More recent, this
image was modified to where
it also associated him with
tree planting.
The profession of forestry
does include all of the above
mentioned practices. Fire con
trol, both suppression and pre
vention, is indeed a very im
portant phase of forestry. Also
reforestation, which covers
II artificial means of replac
ing tree growth, is very much
part. These two phases.lhow-
ever, only represent part of
the entire picture. Such things
as silviculture, logging, utili
zation, research, economics,
engineering, and management
are also in the picture. Web
ster's description of a profes
sion Is "occupation requiring
an education." Foresters to
day are mostly college trained
men and a number of self-
trained men. Most of the for
esters today are graduating
from accredited four year col
leges or universities. Some
ave gone further for their
master's or doctor's des'3-
Another misconception in
the field of forestry Is that all
forestry Is either a federal or
state activity. The federal and
state governments are prac-
tlclnii forestry but so aro
many private enterprises, ei-
their Individuals or compa-
les. Private forest products
companies hire a great many
foresters to carry out all
phases of forest and produc
tion plant management from
tiny seedlings, to logs, to the
finished products.
Private enterprise harvest
and process virtually all tho
timber and owns most ot u
in the United States. A vote
of appreciation should be giv
en to our local lumber tnaus-
trlcs for the good work they
are doing for the benefit of
us all.
Agency Differences
Another misconception or
misunderstanding is the dif
ference between the federal
forest service (USFS), the Bu
reau of Land Management
(BLM), and the Oregon State
Department of Forestry
rOSDF). '
The USFS manages the- na
tional forests throughout the
nation. The BLM manages tne
Old Oregon - California rail-
man lands and the public do-
mnln lands throughout the
United States. The OSDF
manages the Oregon state for
est lands and the state land
board lands. Also the OSDF
has the responsibility to pro
certain private and pub
lic owned lands from fire
within their jurisdiction,
I hope this article has been
helpful for you, the general
public, to better understand
the profession of forestry and
the different federal and state
forest services.

and fast rules for using dif
ferent size plants together.
If large plants are used with
small, control the area of
view. For example, a plot of
ajuga 100 feet square looks
fine with a tree planted In
its midst. The two create a
pleasing -overall effect.
Hillside families can laKe
advantage of plants that look
good from above such as silk
trees, David Viburnum and
pachysandra. Maples, oaks
and flowering cherries are
good for larger areas. Some
plants create slender wall
forms. These Include the
Bamboos, Pyramdial Arbor
vitae and Sentry Maples, Nan
dina is useful In creating a
low barrier or to block off
garden space.
Martcl says we can learn
many tricks from the Japan
ese - students of plant form
without copying their gar
dens. The Japanese plant
many materials away from
the foundation of the house
and the house appears to
float in space.
They're also sensitive to
the simple pattern in leaf
forms and shy away from
garish colors and a great as
sortment of trees and shrubs.
A repetition of forms results
In a peaceful whole.
