Millions of Dollars Allocated
By Legislature for Pay Boosts

dollars were allocated by the
1963 legislature (or pay in
creases. State agency and depart
ment heads had their top pay
upped from the $120 a year
increase received by the em
ployment commissioner, to the
$2,100 a year hike received by
the director of finance and
administration.
A total of $4.2 million wjs
set aside with the emergency
board, made up of legislators,
for increases in civil service
and unclassified personnel pay
rates.
The state board of higher
education received $1,781,627
for pay raises for academic
personnel.
This money is in addition
to automatic merit increases
received by employees.
Governor Gets S21.500
The governor was raised
$1,500 to $21,500 a year. In
addition, he receives $600 a
month for expenses.
The secretary of state and
state treasurer also received
a $1,500 pay increase, bring
ing their pay up to $16,500 a
year.
The attorney general and
labor commissioner were
raised $1,000 a year to $16,
000. -
Pay for the newly-created
position of state fire marshal
was set in a range from $8,200
to $10,140.
The pay for the secretary of
the racing commission, who
was given the additional du
ties of pari-mutuel supervisor,
was increased $6,840 to a top
of $12,840.
The annual salary of the
superintendent of public in
struction was unchanged, and
still ranges from $14,800 to
$17,700.
Salaries of state policemen
were increased. The top pay
ior recruits was upped $120
to a top of $4,800.
Privates were upped $180
to a top of $5,820; privates
first class up $120 to $6,600;
corporals up $120 to $6,900;
sergeants up $300 to $7,500;
lieutenants up $480 to 58,580,
and captains up $900 to $9.

umnist Mike Connolly.
According to one report the
actress walked Into the of
fices of a movie trade maga
zine and spoke with Connolly,
who invited her into his of
fice. She refused and swung
at him. Connolly ducked and
Miss MacLaine swung again.
The second try struck him on
the shoulder and the third on
the face.
"He has repeatedly been in
accurate in reporting my per
sonal life and career," the 29-year-old
star said later. "As a
result, I saw fit to express myself."
Connolly, who also was hit
by Lana Turner's ex-husband,
Fred May, three years ago,
described the blow as "just a
love to."
