leading by one stroke. Jones stayed four
holes, and Jack bogied three and double
bogied the other. By the time Jones real
ized he was putting pressure on Jack and
left, Jack was three down, and he lost."
On a -11,000 JayCee scholarship, Jack
entered Ohio State University, turning
down more handsome athletic scholarships
because he felt the schools were more in
terested in developing his muscle than in
telligence. He needed only a few more
credits for a degree when he decided to
turn professional, but a university ad
ministrator refused to allow him to con
tinue school, saying he "didn't need an
education on a golf course."
You get an insight into the competitive
ness beneath Nicklaus' benign exterior
when he discusses this disappointment.
"I'm going back for a degree as soon as I
have full PGA membership, say in five
years or so," he states emphatically. Why?
After all, he will earn an estimated $200,
000 this year as golf star, and he admits
a degree to him is "just a piece of paper."
The answer is in Nicklaus' character: (1)
he is a perfectionist who must finish every
thing he starts; (2) he considers the arbi
trary decision to drop him from the uni
versity an affront to him personally as
well as to all athletes. "Imagine," he says
icily, "an educator telling somebody he
doesn't need, an education imagintV
As a freshman at the university. Jack
met a home-town coed, Barbara Bash. By
the time spring came, Barbara must have
had a good idea that this was the Big
Romance because she took golf as a physical-education
course, as Jack explains it,
"just to know what I was doing."
When discussing his own game, Nick
laus usually is vague. But he can recite
almost every stroke Barbara took: "The
girls practiced in the gym for most of the
class, but as a final exam they went out on
a course and played' five holes. Barbara
was only two over par her first time out,
and she quit right then. Said she knew
enough and that was it!"
Recently Barbara has taken to the links
again with her husband, and Jack then fore
goes his maddeningly slow brand of golf
"just to have fun." But the couple spends
much more time revising an architect's
plans for a sprawling five-bedroom cedar-and-stone
home to be built very near the
local golf course. It will have a trophy
room and inclosed formal garden but no
driving range. "I divorce myself from golf
when I come home," says Jack.
Everything appears on the way up for
the Nicklaus family as the U. S. Open
approaches. In his second year as a pro,
Jack already is golf's leading money win
ner. He hopes both his wife and father
will be on hand for the tourney at Brook
line, Mass. Even his own recurrent illness,
a trick hip, seems dormant. And beat of all,
Jack, who looks much heftier on a tv screen
than in person, has found a doctor who
confirms what he suspected all along. On
a recent afternoon while en route to a fish
ing date with his dad. Jack came charging
home, calling to Barbara:
"The doctor just told me I'm the right
weight for my build about 205, and the
waist is only 35 inches ! Says if I diet down
too much, I'd lose stamina. Let's have
lunch! I'm starved!"
That boyish upstart from Columbus
just can't go wrong. He can't even eat him
self out of championships.
