Washington - WPI) - A gadget
which enabled 36-year-old as
tronaut L. Gordon Cooper to

some day help build a cheap

It's already being used ex
perimentally to produce more
uniform steel and glass.
The gadget is the horizon
sensor. It told Cooper, wheth
er he was flying true in space.
Before his re-entry into the
atmosphere he used the sen
sor to determine his space
capsule's position in relation
to the horizon. The informa
tion enabled him to correct
his' "attitude" to the required
degrees.
But the horizon sensor is
nothing more than a measur
ing device, using infra-red ele
ments sensitive to hot and
cold. And as a measuring de
vice, a steel firm is testing
the space gadget to increase

Heretofore, it was neces

lines had to be shut down
overnight to await the infor

could be made.
With the infra-red sensor,

Jenkins Speaks at
Ashland Chamber on
Tourist Business
to spend a few extra days
in Oregon is the most impor
tant single project on which
residents of the state should
concentrate, according to
Frank Jenkins of Klamath
Falls in a talk before the
Ashland Chamber of Com
merce Tuesday.
Jenkins, former publisher
and editor of the Klamath
Falls Herald and News, now
writes a column for that pa
per which also appears in the
Medford Mail Tribue and the
Roseburg News - Review. He
also serves as ci-airman of the
tourist information commit
tee of the tourist and travel
division of the state highway
department.
More than 9 million tour
ists visted Oregon last year
and brought with them some
$217 million in new dollars
to bolster the state's econo
my, Jenkins said.
Have to Stop Them
"But the great problem,"
he said, "is that each tourist
who came spent an average
of only 2.93 days in the state.
What we've got to do is to
stop them as they go past."
He offered several sugges
tions on how to get visitors
to stay in the state longer,
among them a billboard pro
gram and special fishing areas
for children.
He suggested placing a bill
board somewhere south of
Redding advising motorists
thai they are entering the
"State of Jefferson," follow
ed up with billboards at each
community along the high
ways listing things to do and
see in that area.
Would Be Expensive
He admitted that such a
program would be expensive
to undertake, however, and
suggested the fishing pond
for children idea as a less
costly possibility. Lakes or
streams could be stocked with
a plentiful supply of easy-to-catch
inedible fish not nor
mally sought after by adult
fisherman, he said.
Three out of every five
tourist cars that came into
the state last year carried
children, he pointed out, pre
dicting that if such fishing
areas were set up and prop
erly promoted, the children
in many of these cars would

Another method is what is

That's technical language for

Americans Work Hard
To Save Extra Labor
New York -HTD- Building
statistics show that Americans
are working hard to save
steps.
More and more houses are
being built on one floor-no
upstairs - according t o Wil
liam J. Levitt, president of
Levitt and Sons, Inc. He
aid nine out of every 10 now
homes built today are of the
one-story type while of exist
ing homes only 75 per cent
are single-level.
Some of the off-shoot de
velopments were unexpected
and surprising.
At the Jet Propulsion lab
oratory in Pasadena, Calif., a
solid propellant fuel was be
ing developed in a star-shaped
mold. However, the fuel was
sticky and wouldn't come away
away clean fom te mold. Con
ventional lubricants couldn't
clean from the mold. Con
inated the propellant. The
laboratory tried out a sub
stance known as F-E-P which
is very much like teflon, used
to coat frying pans so that
food won't stick to the uten
sil. It worked perfectly.
Many Uses
The substance also worked
for a hat manufacturer who
found that, with use of the
coating, felt wouldn't stick to
hat molds. The agency be
lieves the idea also will be
practical for furniture manu
facturers, and plywood plants.
One big development com
ing along is the use of dry
lubricants for moving parts
in space. The agency believes
developments with dry lubri
cants will be of great benefits
to the bearing industry.
But the "earthly" develop
ments of space research are
not confined to industrial use.
Practically every known
science is Involved, including
medicine.
One device being worked
on now is expected to become
a research tool for study of
the heart. With long trips
coming up in space, NASA is
trying to develop an electrode
which astronauts can wear
for prolonged periods to ob
tain cardiographs. Present
electrodes cause skin irrita
tions when used for more than
brief periods. Once developed,
physicians will be able to
have patients wear the elec
trodes day after day to study
heart reaction during normal
activity.
Aids Health
The agency also is con
vinced that much of its re
search on air, water and waste
disposal will be useful, not
only to astronauts, but to pub
lic health here on earth.
Some NASA discoveries are
found to be useless for space,
but can be used on earth. One
gadget may make speech at
political conventions cheap as
well as plentiful. The device
was developed in an attempt
to overcome the brief radio
communications blackout en
countered when an as'ronaut
is coming down from space.
A space scientist figured
out a cheap method of using a.
ray of light plus a corner re
fleeter for voice transmit,
sion. It won't work for ths
astronaut But the so-called
"retrometer" is expected to ba
extremely useful for commu
nication in noisy plants or at
large meetings, such as politi
cal conventions.
