Farrell, 6-4 and 225 pounds,
worked exclusively as a re
lief pitcher for the Phillies
and didn't pitch a complete
game until his 268th game tn
the majors. The other mem
bers of the Phillies' famed
"Dalton Boys" were Jack
Meyer and Jim Owens.

Drysdale, who had a 25-9
record last season, struck out
13 Colts and walked only one.
Farrell had five strikeouts

Beatty To Run
Compton Mile

Beatty, America's top middle-
distance runner, will run the
mile against New Zealand's
Peter Snell Friday night at
the Compton relays.
Beatty, who finished third
in the California Relays at
Modesto which Snell won in
3:54.9, said Monday he had
decided to enter the mile
rather than the two-mile.
In addition, other sub-four
milers in the race were Ma
rine Cary Weisiger, second in
the California Relays; Dyrol
Burleson, and Jim Grelle.

Commissioner Ford Frick met
the gambling question head-on
today, without flinching, side
stepping or denying "it"
would happen to baseball just
as it has to other sports.
The commissioner said he is
proud of baseball's clean rec
ord overall although he is
"not gloating over it."
"Who knows?" he said. "We
might have some kind of in
cident tomorrow. I rather
doubt it, though, because I
have great confidence in our
players."
Despite his confidence, Frick
feels it still requires "a con
stant awareness" on the part
of everyone connected with
baseball, including his office,
club owners, managers, play
ers and even club-house boys,
to maintain the integrity of
the game.

The same old caddy but a new
grip on his driver pulled Dow
Finsterwald out of golfdom's
doldrums today with his first
major victory in more than
three years.
The former PGA champion
from Tequesta, Fla., banged
home two birdies on the final
three holes Monday for a
three-under-par 68 to win the
fourth annual $55,000 "500
Festival" golf tourney by two
shots.
That gave him a 72-hole
score of 268, 16 under par,
and $10,000 top money and
boosted him from ninth to
sixth place in earnings on
this year's circuit with $26,

heads for the Buick Open at
Flint, Mich., grabbed his first
victory since the New Orleans
Open in 1960. He set the stage
for the showdown with a red
hot seven-under-par 64 that
tied him for the 64-hole lead
with Julius Boros.
Dissatisfied with his driver
despite his fine round, he
changed the grip for the final
round and that and his caddy
may have made the differ
ence. "I thought my driving was
much better," said Finster
wald. "And my caddy, Tom
Vinson, was a big help, too,
especially in figuring the
yardage from hole to hole.

bag for Finsterwald here last
year, when Dow finished out
of the top dozen.

pany of questionable associ
ates. To me, that's far more
important than any so-called
gambling threat.
"No matter how innocent a
player may be, he is imme
diately subject to public scru
tiny if he associates with any
type of undesirable element.
"And once the public doubts
a player, it also doubts tha
game."
