Look for the San Francisco
Giants to break the National
league race wide open any
day now.
Why?
Willie Mays, that's why.
When Willie gets into one
of his hitting streaks he liter
ally carries the Giants, even
with all those other muscular
hitters, on his back. He gave
evidence that he has shaken
off his most recent slump Sun.,
day by ramming three humeri
as the Giants dclcatca me ti.
Louis Cardinals, 6-4.
They were homers No. o, 9
and 10 for Mays, who hadn't
hit one since May 17. During
that period the Giants won
seven games and lost six, and,
even though they held onto
first place in the NL race, it
hardly was a pace befitting a
contender, let alone the de

league career the 32-year-old
Mays has been a streak hitter,
and this year doesn't seem
any different than the other
11. The thing about Mays' hit
ting streaks, though, is that
they sometimes produce awe
some results - such as Sun
day's three homers.
The first homer came with
Harvey Kuenn aboard in the
first inning and was a typical
four-base blow - not too long
a drive but no cheapie by any
means. The second hit the
scoreboard at St. Louis' Busch
Stadium in deep left-center,
a drive of about 400 feet, and
ctrsit with the bases empty in
the eighth. The third reached
to the foot of the scorebosrd
in the ninth and gave the
Giants a 6-1 lead.
Willie snowed signs of com
ing out of his hitting slump
on Saturday when he got three
hits in four at-bats. He finish
ed the three-game set against
the Cardinals with six hits
in 11 at-bats and raised hit
average 18 points to .234 -far
below his career average
of .319.
The victory enabled the Gi
ants to salvage one game
against the Cardinals and wid-
ened their lead to two games
! over second place St. Louis
I and 3 ',3 over the Los Angeles
Dodgers, who lost to the Cin
cinnati Reds, 3-2.
In the other NL games, the
New York Mets swept s dou
blcheadcr from the Pittsburgh
Pirates, 2-1 and 4-3, the Hous
ton Colls nipped the Milwau.
kee Braves, 3-1, in 17 innings,
and Philadelphia and Chicago
split, the Phils winning the
opener, 5-2, and the Cubs tak
ing the nightcap, 3-2.
Jim O Toole picKea up ms
ninth victory in beating the
Dodgers, but it took some
weird doings to achieve as the
Reds scorxd three runs on
bunt during five-run second
inning. A double, infield hit
and a walk loaded the bases
after two out in the second.
The Dodger infield then threw
the ball around, two runs
crossing on an error by Dick
Tracewski and three on a wild
throw by Don Zimmer.
The Mets gained their first
game victory when Bill Vir
don and Jerry Lynch collided
chasing a fly ball in the 10th
inning as pinch-hitter Rod Ka-
nchl scored from second, and
they gained their second win
on a 10th Inning homer by
Jim Hickman. Believer Elroy
Face was charged with both
defeats.
Four consecutive singles in
the top of the 17th produced
the margin of victory for the
Colts, who struggled four
hours and 38 minutes before
beating the Braves. Hal Wood-

cut their four-game losing
streak against the Houston

ex-Dodger Dick Farrel, 4-5, on
the mound at the start of a
three-game scries.
In the Dodgers' 5-2 loss to
the Reds Sunday, Cincinnati
scored all its runs in the sec

were put out on easy ground

Memo to American league

If you want to beat the
New York Yankees, save your
lefthanders for the world

And if you need proof of
that statement just take a
look at what Jack Kralick

the Cleveland Indians did to
the Yankees on Sunday.
Kralick, who seems to have

But the joy of the Angels
was tempered somewhat in
Sunday's game when catcher
Bob Rodgers twisted his right
ankle beating out a bunt and
probably will be sidelined Jor
two or three days.
"Rodgers was just starting
to come back after having
been out for a couple of weeks
with a broken finger and this
was a tough thing for him,"
Rigney said.
Although he savored the
hitting of his Anje! iwingcrs,
Rigney said a big factor in the
sweep was the fine pitching
the club enjoyed. The Los
Angeles hurlers held the top
Oriole hitlers to just scattered
safeties with the dangerous
Brooks Robinson getting only
one hit in three games and
dropping his average nearly
30 points.
The Yankees have lost only
17 games thus far this season
in 43 starts but eight of those
setbacks have been to south

departed Bo Belinsky, who
had just that lone victory
over the New Yorkers this
season in eight decisions.

Joe Adcock's three - run
