Two Americans Killed in Yief Nam
Saigon, South Viet Nam -IVPD
- Two U.S. Army special
forces men, a captain and a
sergeant, were killed from
ambush by a platoon of Com
munist guerrillas Wednesday,
a U.S. military spokesman
said today.
The names of the slain
Americans were not made
public immediately.
The spokesman said the two
were leading a patrol of
mountain tribesmen in Jungle
matted mountains of the cen
tral highlands in Quang Ngai
Providence, about 325 miles
north of here.
Several Communist guer
rillas were killed or wound
ed when the mountain men
returned the fire, the spokes
man said. None of the tribes
men was hit.
The fatalities brought to 87
the number of U.S. service
men killed in South Viet Nam
since the U.S. buildup began
in 1961. The total includes 63
killed in combat and 24 killed
in accidents.

Hired Farm Workers Are Building Social Security
Almost 2 million hired farm
workers are now building so
cial security credit toward fu
ture benefits for themselves
and their families.
But, according to Edward
B. Jacobson, social security
district manager, many others
who should be getting credit
toward old-age, survivors, and
disability insurance benefits,
are failing to do so.
Jacobson said a farm work
er is covered by social secu
rity if he is paid $150 cash
wages or more in a year by
an employer, or if he works
for an employer on 20 or more
days on a time, rather than
a piecework basis. In either of
these two situations, the em
ployer Is required by law to
report the worker's earnings
and pay the social security
taxes due.
"These reports are due in
January of each year," he
said. "But right, now, in the
growing season, the farm em
ployer needs to make sure
that he is keeping a record of
the people he hires so that he
will be in a position to make
his report when January rolls
around."
No elaborate record-keeping
system is needed, Jacob
son pointed out, but the farm
employer should make sure
that he makes a record of the
correct name and social secu
rity number of each employee,
copying it carefully from the
worker's social security card.
Then he will need to enter
the cash wage payments he
makes to each, and the
amount, if any, he deducts
from those wages as the em
security tax, Jacobson noted,
ployee's share of the social
If he has not kept such a
record at first because he did
not expect the employee to
meet the $150 or the 20-day
test of social security cover
age, but it turns out that one
or both of these tests will be
met, he should begin keeping
records for the employee. He
can estimate for the record
the amount he has already
paid the employee in the year.
Farm employers who want
more information about how
to report their farm employ
ees for social security, should
get in touch with the nearest
social security office. The of
