DANGER TO SECURITY-Newton D. Glekel. left, a New
York industrialist and philanthropist, warns that classroom
shortages may be endangering the nation's security. Glekel,
whose firm manufactures mobile classrooms, presents
Wayne C. Reed, deputy commissioner of education, with a
working model of such a classroom. He said that mobile
classrooms can do much to alleviate the classroom short

Tetracycline Slows
Growth of Bone in
Unborn Children

cycline enters a woman who
Is in the late stages of preg
nancy, some of it gets de
posited in the skeleton of her
unborn child. And tetracy
cline in the skeleton of the
newly born babe, especially
one prematurely born, slows
bone growth.
This is of sharp interest to
medical science because tetra
cycline is among the most
widely used of antibiotics. H
is taken by mouth and kills
a wide range of infecting bac
teria, it has few side effects
nd none is serious if it is
respected.
The three doctors who re
ported this to the medical
profession said they had no
evidence whatever that any
babe had been harmed be
cause its mother took tetra
cycline before it was born or
because it received tetracy
cline after birth for a bac
terial infection of its own.
The slowing of bone
growth, measured in babes as
well as in animals, is consid
e able but the growth pattern
resumes its normal rate quick
ly when the tetracycline
medication ceases, they said
On the other hand, any drug
capable of crossing the '"pla
cental barrier between preg
nant women and unborn life
is a drug to avoid if possible,
they added.

American Medical Associa
tion. They were not advising
against the use of tetracycline
In pregnant women who have
infections that demand it,
they said.
But "the physician of all
disciplines has been repeated
ly cautioned against the pro
miscuous use of drugs for
vague indications," they con
tinued. "During pregnancy
the .problem is compounded,
and it would seem prudent to
administer even well-known
drugs only when absolutely
indicated. The widespread use
of newer preparations often
with unproved effectiveness,
for minor complaints is an
unnecessary risk."
Thev did not mention tha-I
lidamide and its tragic con
sequences directly but that
horror has focused medical
science on drugs and preg
nancy. The evidence that tet
racycline enters the skeleton
has been accumulating for
some time in all parts of the
world, they reminded.
Pretenc Unquestionable
The presence of the depos
its are unquestionable because
they are fluorescent under
ultraviolet light. In the teeth
of some young children who
have had tetracycline ultra
violet light is not needed to
reveal deposits because the
teeth are visibly colored in
ordinary light.
If this property of tetra
cycline was harmful in any
way you'd think the harm
would have shown up long
before now, in view of the
millions who have taken the
antibiotic over the past IS
years, the doctors said. Yet it
is a property which science
does not understand and for
that reason it must be kept in
mind, particularly in preg
nancy.
The scientists experimented
with pregnant rats. Those
which were given doses of
tetracycline daily through the
10th and 15th days of preg
nancy, gave birth to young
which were 28 per cent small
er than the young of rats
which had had no tetracy
cline. Such experiments are
not possible in human beings,
of course.
