By ZAN STARK
Snlem UPIt An estimated
6,000 high school students are
about to make a decision that
will affect the
future course
of their lives,
and possibly
trap them for
ever at a be
low average
income level.
They will drop
out of high
school. Not
every dropout
be a failure.
Some enter the armed services
and find themselves in their
new life. Others realize later
the limitations of restricted
schooling and take night
courses or in some other man
ner resume their education.
Percentage-wise the situa
tion hag improved over the
past 11 years, although the
number of dropouts has re

Glen Weaver of the Depart
ment of Education said one of
three, or 6,847 of the 18,918
students who entered the
ninth grade in 1048, dropped
out before graduation in 1952.
The 1958 freshman class to
taled '26,762. The dropout rate
was one in four, and 20,750
graduated in 1962, for a loss
of 6,012.
In this modern age, a high
school diploma is only the be
ginning. Eldon Cone, director of the
State Employment Service,
has released an "open letter"
to 1903 high school graduates
which urges them to consider
their job future carefully.
"In this jet-propelled, auto
mated age of electro-mechani
cal innovations the high
school diploma is not always
a passport into the better jobs
in a highly competitive labor
market."
He urged high school grad
uates who are not planning to
go on to college "to make
early contact with the nearest
office of the Stale Employ
ment Service ..."
He called upon employers
to provide on-the-job training
opportunities including ap
prenticeship wherever possi
ble for the high school grad
uates entering the labor market.

ford.
They are the clan of the
President's mother and they
plan a welcome for ihe Presi
dent aimed to rival the cead
mile faille (hundred thousand
welcomes) he will get from
the Kennedys of New Boss.
Visit Scheduled Jun 28
The President is scheduled
to visit Cork June 28. When
his helicopter touches down,
history will have turned a full
circle for the Fitzgeralds.
The President will land in
the same green fields from
which his great - great grand
father, John Fitzgerald, was
evicted 153 years ago and his
land given to English
planters.
When the great famine
came, one of John's six sons,
James, sailed to Boston where
he married an Irish girl, Kath-!
crine Cadogan. One of their
children, James Fitzgerald,
became famous as the "Honey
Fitz" of Boston politics and
is the man for whom Presi
dent Kennedy has named the
presidential yacht.
"Honey Fitz" in his turn
also married an Irish girl,
Barbara Hannan. Their
daughter is Rose, the Presi
dent's mother.
The information on the
Fitzgerald family, gathered
before the Kennedys were so
politically prominent, was put
together by Cork-born retired
U.S. naval Lieut. J. J. Cado
gan of San Francisco. He
came across the Fitzgeralds of
Skibberecn while researching
his own family tree.
He was startled, he said, by
the strong family resemblance
of the Irish Fitzgeralds to the
Boston Kennedys. He discov
ered three Fitzgerald brothers
on a 60-acre farm at Abbey,
near Skibbcrecn, were the
great-great-grandsons of Pat
rick Fitzgerald, brother of
James Fitzgerald, who emi
grated to Boston.
