History Pamphlet
Given to Library
Acting Postmaster Al Brad
ford has presented the Pub
lic Library of Medford and
Jackson County with a 44
page pamphlet issued by the
Post Office department as
part of its centennial celebra
tion of the Paris Conference
of 1863.
A new 15 - cent airmail
stamp was issued this month
in honor of Montgomery
Blair, Abraham Lincoln's
postmaster general, who sug
gested the conference.
The Paris Conference was
the first international confer
ence on postal problems and
led to the founding of the
Universal Postal union, which
regulates the handling of in
ternational mail, Bradford ex
plained. New Ideas
Although he ran the Post
Office department during the
Civil War period, Blair was
responsible for some of the
important mail handling in
novations in the country's his
tory. He introduced free de
livery of mail in cities, the
money order system, and the
railway post office to assem
ble and distribute mail en
route.
Bradford said that copies of
the Montgomery Blair pam
phlet may be obtained from
the Superintendent of Docu
ments, U. S. Government
Printing office, Washington
25, D.C., for 25 cents a copy.
