Both congressmen were im

marked him as an American
of whom to be proud. Ullman
groped for words to express
his feelings on Cooper:

tributes paid to Cooper. Their
faces glowed: they were par
ticipating with him. The oth
er thing, when he made the
comment about our flight be
ing made in the open by a
tree society, there was a gen
eral round of applause, but
the representatives from the
Iron Curtain countries were
not clapping."
'I can't help but think,"
he continued, "how fortun
ate we have been that we
haven't had a memorial serv
ice for anyone yet."
"We have risked so much
and yet they are all still with
us. We must realize that
this Is not only a result of
really good training, but the
'Old Man Upstairs' must have
had his eye on Cooper too.
All paths of human develop
ment are marked by a series
of crosses, and we have sure
ly been lucky so far."
Speech Full of Praise
Cooper, in a quiet, flat, Ok
lahoma twang, made a sim
ple, unaffected speech, full
of praise for his co-workers.
He closed with a prayer
which he said he had' made. Still smiling broadly, he left I other Americana wait to hon-

of his belief In God, he said)

to operate the spacecraft on
re-entry. He thanked God for
allowing him to be a part of
the space program and for
allowing him to see the "start
ling and wondrous things"
that God had made.
After the speech Cooper
stayed briefly in the office of
Speaker John McCormack
while newsmen clustered out
side, eager to catch a glimpse
of him when he emerged.
