Fences With Personality
Fences are useful, decorative end as different as their owners. Originally used as a barrier to prevent escape
or intrusion and to mark boundaries, the modern fence still serves these purposes and can also be en artis
tic addition to a garden or patio. This fence of closely set rustic rails at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. C,
Vandagrift, 1564 Whitman avenue, was constructed by Mr, Vandagrift after he had completed an old
fashioned looking rail fence around two sides of his corner lot.

Artistry and utility are combined in this solid looking block fence at the home of L. A. Young,
1557 Stewart avenue. Made of scrap decking which has double tongue and groove, the fence
provides Interesting contrast for the bird bath.

These weather-beaten pickets are part of a fence
standing on the historic Peter Brill property in Jack
sonville and could be very old. They appear to have
been hand-shaped.

The posts of this fence are sections of old power poles which B. L. Sander
son, 940 South Grape street, obtained from the California Oregon Power com
pany a number of years ago and treated with oil from hit service station. Mr.
Sanderson suggested to The Mail Tribune some time ago that Photographer
Robert Vroman would find fences a challenging picture subject.

Cement block walls with inset patterns are a modern replacement lor wood and wire fences. This one was designed
and erected by Dr. Robert Delormi to provide a screen for the patio at his home, 97 Windsor avenue.

Robert I, Carpemor, 1325 Siskiyou boulevard, built this fence of cedar boards to mark his properly line and protect hit
garden and small trees. The panels art painted, with two colors alternating.
