Title Meet; Cavemen Place Third;
Myrtle Creek Is A-2 Champion
Oregon Slate University,
Corvallis - Jefferson of Port
land, paced by sprint man
Leon Lincoln, and Myrtle
Creek, led by Ross Barkhurst
and Ron Salmon, captured the
Oregon Class A-l and A-2
high school track champion
chip here Saturday.
The Jefferson Democrats,
with Lincoln winning the 100
and 220 yard dashes and an
choring the relay team to vic
tory, piled up 46 points to
outdistance the second place
team by five points.
North Eugene . was second
with 41, Grants Pass took
third with 35, Hillsboro fourth
with 26, and Medford and
Marshfield tied for fifth
with 24.
Myrtle Creek, which last
week was nosed out by one
point for the District 6 crown,
totaled 36 points to edge out
Central Linn for the A-2 hon
ors. The Central Linn Cobras
had 34 points, Reedsport was
the third place team with 32,
Creswell scored 30, Rogue
River 29 and St. Mary's 28.
The placings of Myrtle
Creek, Rogue River and St.
Mary's gave District 6 three
teams among the top fix.
Individual honors in the
meet were taken by Allen
Fowler of Creswell, who
scored 30 points with three
firsts in the A-2 bracket, and
Jefferson's Lincoln. Fowler
took both hurdle events in
his class and the broad jump,
setting a new record of 22
6 in the broad jump.
Lincoln's dash double and
relay anchor gave him 22
points in Class A-l.
Records Fall
In the Class A-l bracket,
two records were broken, as
Leon Lincoln ran his 220 pre
lim Friday in 21.6 and equal
ed the time Saturday. Gary
Van Koten of Grants Pass and
Mark Hcnningsgaard of Cot
tage Grove pole vaulted 13
feet, 1V inches. Van Koten
picked up the first place med
al on the strength of fewer
misses.
In Class A-2, in addition to
Fowler's broad jump record,
a new mark was set by the
Central Linn relay team with
a time of 1:32.2. Gene Fair
cloth of Reedsport, set a rec
ord in the half mile In the
prelims Friday with 1.57 flat.
Fowler was the meet's only
triple winner, however. Fair
cloth doubled in A-2 by win
ning the mile in 4:25.3.
In Class A-l, Bud Walsh of
Marshfield won both hurdle
events, the highs in 14.7 and
the lows in 21.6.
Contributing to Medford's
fifth place tie were Mike Die
bele, who was second in the
100 in 10 flat and second in
the 220 in 22.3; Don Driskell,
who was forth in the high hur
dles with 14.9; and Steve
Toews, who placed fifth In the
half mile in 1:56.6.
For Grants Pass, Van Ko
ten turned in the top effort,
but Bob Shepard was second
in the low hurdles in 19.9, and
third in the 100 in 10.2; Marty
Bauer was fifth in the shot
put and Theron Bone was
sixth in the discus. Grants
Pass also took a fourth in the
relay.

Watch out for these fantastic
spark plug claims that seem to
off springing up out of the
ground these days. If they were
all that they're cracked up to
be, they'd be in the late model
cars because spark plugs have
to develop right along with the
engines of automobiles. A spark
plug from a ten-year-old car
wouldn't last long in one of to
day's models. They're" simply
not designed to take the beat
ing of the powerful new igni
tion systems. The toughest
grind for your spark plugs is
city driving. This low speed cold
operation permits deposits to be
built up on thff points, thus re
ducing efficiency. A city-driven
car should be taken out on the
open road or expressway occa
sionally and opened up to bum
off the points.
For efficiency sake let us
check your plugs and points
