Western Oregon Forest Closures Effective Friday
By ZAN STARK
Salem OJPU The closed
fire season begins Friday in
all of Western Oregon, and in
most of East
e r n Oregon,
as a prelude
to what could
become one of
the most dis
astrous forest
fire, years in
the state's history.
The closed
season began 1
Tuesday in the Klamath fire
district, and in parts of the'
UrU
Fremont and Rogue National
Forests. In Eastern Oregon
the only areas not included in
the fire season declaration
were Baker, Umatilla and
Wallowa counties, and the
Vale-Burns grazing district in
Malheur and Harney counties.
Throughout the rest of Ore.
gon burning permits will be
required, and extreme cau
tion will be exercised In an
effort to avoid disaster.
State Forester Dwight
Phipps said more than $8 mil
lion is available this season
for forest protection.

About 15.7 million acres of lumbus Day storm, and below-

by the Slate Forestry Depart

protection associations, Phipps
said
Phipps explained nearly $4

budgeted, $1.6 million is in

and S2.5 million is expected
to be spent by private forest
landowners for fire hazard re-

Two problems threaten to1
add to the fire danger this
year blowdown from the Co-

more fuel for fires, and the
ground will dry faster so that
undergrowth will become
more flammable.

Six are administered directly
