The assurance that he will
share the Republican congres
sional leadership platform at
some future date may make
Nixon feel more comfortable
in his strange new role of
being more practicing law
than practicing politician.
GOP sources said it was an
assurance he was looking for.
Arrived Too Early
Nixon arrived Wednesday,
24 hours too early for today's
scheduled "Ev and Charlie"
leadership meeting and news
conference of Senate Leader
Everett M. Dlrksen (111.) and
House Leader Charles A.
HfcUeck (Ind.),
The I960 GOP presidential
nominee lunched with Senate
and House Republican lead
ers Wednesday.
Nixon made it clear to
newsmen he was not out gun
ning for any 1964 presiden
tial candidate, be it Sen. Bar
ry Goldwater (Ariz.), New
York Gov. Nelson A. Rocke
feller or anyone else.
He said ' Eisenhower-Nixon
Republicans" could and
should be able to support any
of the prominently mentioned
White House prospects.
Neither "kingmaker" nor
candidate, as he said, the
transplanted Californian now
is experiencing the problems
known by Republican Thom
as E. Dewey and Democrat
Adlai E. Stevenson as defeat
ed presidential nominees.
Follows Others
Like Nixon, both Dewey
and Stevenson turned to the
law, travel and international
affairs in fashioning new ca
reers after years in politics.
Now a New York attorney,
Nixon plans to leave for an
extended European tour June
11, The combined vacation,
work and study trip will
bring him home In August
ready to make speeches and
write articles in the months
before the 1964 election.
The former vice president
emphasized that he expected
to speak out on the issues.
Wednesday's visit, which in
cluded breakfast with his old
"Chowder and Marching
Club" colleagues in the House,
helped to lay the foundation
for his future operations.
CAR COSTS
New York fUPIi The aver
age cost of operating an euto
has declined to 14.47 cents a
mile from 15.60 cents two
years ago, according to the
Automobile Legal association.
Democrats Expected
To Help Pass Tax Bill
Salem - iUPIl - House Speak
er Clarence Barton said to
day Democrats would help
pass Gov. Mark Hatfield's net
receipts bill it it comes out of
the Senate-House tax confer
ence committee.
"That's Hatfield's bill that
the House conferees are pro
posing. We are not being par
tisan, we are trying to solve
this thing (tax deadlock)."
"If the Republicans Insist
on a net receipts tax and a
cigarette tax we'll have plen
ty of votes here to pass it,
and I have reason to believe
it can even pass the Senate,"
Barton commented.
