Mrs. Alma Denny,
Dorig A. It'i a sordid life
and I pity Josic.
Margtry N. I have no
sympathy lor her. She chose
it.
Doris A. Margery and I
disagree about a mutual
friend who ia "living in sin."
Things have come to a head
because Margie refuses to ac
company me when I'm meet
ing Josie for lunch or at the
hairdresser; until now, we'd
been inseparable since school
days. We're married and
Josie isn't. She had the mis
fortune to fall in love with a
married man whose wife
won't divorce him. So she's
taking second-best, a back
street arrangement.
Margery N. Josie walked
into the mess she's in with
her eyes wide open. Falling
for a married man is playing
with fire. Josie chose to play
instead of running awav.
There's no law tying her to
mis way of life she's not
helpless. Married men mak
ing goo-goo eyes at other wom
en can be had for a dime a
dozen, but only a fool en
courages them. Josie didn't
have to fall in love with that
cnaracter she asked for it
I'll steer clear.
Street, Josie will be able to
see the Llead and sign. Boy
friend, however, may make a
contrite U-turn back home.
So it's not second-best she has
now it's a wasting illness
. . . Margery need not judge
or condone, and certainly not
scorn her friend. Nor Is pity
the answer. Josie requires
the clear-eyed guidance of a
professional therapist.

The Council: A wise lady
commented that many men
who "play around" have at
tractive, charmine wives with
whom they think they're
unhappy. The truth is, she
opines, they're just unhannv
with themselves and are fish
ing lor solutions, one nf
wnicn they hope is a mistress
Of Course, the hnllmarlr
oi a mature adult is the abil
ity to make wise choices, and
especially to see that there is
a choice. Josie's decision goes
against lie Diled-UD w srlnm
and experience of The Code
evolved for a stable society.
Ditto for her paramour's de
cision, the carrying-put of
which she makes possible.
When the sun sets on Back
History records that Oregon
and Washington were discov
ered by two trappers named
Green and Thistlewaite who
immediately started a fierce
argument over who owned
which.
This was the origin of the
famous saying you still hear
today, namely "Keep Oregon,
Green."
