Furniture
Tips Given
By Expert
By MARGERY MeELHENY
. Chicago - IUPD - If you own
a chair that has been reup
holstered once or -ore, you
should be proud of your pur
chase. You are among the mi
nority who knows how to buy
sensibly, reports J. Gordon
Knapp, president of n indus
trial design firm.-
!'The chair you like' well
enough to have reupholsered
was obviously, a good choice
In the first place, he said,
"and means you are not sus
ceptible to the costly mistakes
of impulse buying.
Knapp, associated with
Palma-Knapp, Inc., has some
easy-to-follow tips to help you
shop sensibly:
-Don't be snared by fads
or fashions. "The mark of a
good design is its ability to
stand the test of time. If some-
' thing new appears on the
market, wait a while to eval-
. uate and re-evaluate it," he
said.
-Resist status buying.
. "Keeping up with the Joneses
is expensive," Knapp said
that an item bought because
It's "in" is merely duplicat
ing someone else's tr jtes.
Simple , Designs
-Shy away from overly
complex furniture. "Good de
sign is basically simple, with
nothing to detract from the
object's function," he said. "If
gimmicks are there only to
impress you, beware!" '
-Know room measurements
and where the item will go.
"Furniture or carpeting that
looks stunning in the store
may be all wrong for your
home or your way of life,"
he explained. "Remember
that colors look different un
der store lights, compared
with natural light or the
lamps in your living room.
-Beware of illusion. Steer
clear of the object that looks
like something else - a fam
ily home that looks like" a
honeymoon cottage. Or a
bronre horse with a clock in
Its stomach. "Odd designs that
detract from the basic func
tion of a product soon lose
their appeal," Knapp said.
Table Sale Used
As Beauty Treatment
Experts Declared
Chicago - (UPP - The budget
minded homemaker can use
salt for a number of beauty
treatments, beauty experts re
port. Begin your day by adding
a brisk salt rub to your morn
ing bath. Simply draw a
warm bath, relax in it for five
minutes until the pores are
open, then massa?e with gen
erous applications of dry table
salt until your body tingles.
; For a facial, mix salt and
olive oil in equal portions and
gently massage the face and
throat with long upward
strokes. The olive oil soothes
while the salt removes im
purities in the skin. Follow
with a gentle face washing.
' Puffy eyes due to tension
or loss of sleep can be soothed
by applying cotton pads, mois
tened in a solution of a pint of
hot water and one tablespoon
of salt.
Soak red, wrinkled hands
for five minutes in a basin (.
warn water with three table
spoons of salt added. This
whitens and smooths the
hands. Follow with an ap
plication of hand lotion.
There's even a salty hint
for aching feet. After the net
shopping day, dissolve a
handful of salt in a warm foot
bath. Soak your feet and then
massage gently with mois
tened salt. After the massage,
' ' rinst In cool water and dry.

Acrilan is slow burning and
no more of a fire hazard than
cotton or rayon. The Civil
Aeronautics Authority which
has rigid standards tor mater
ials used In planes, approved
of Acrilan carpet and found
it to be two to three times
less flammable than their
standard requirements. Fire
prevention organizations have
stated there is no fire hazard
from normal use of this
carpet.
The National Fire Protec

potential fire hazards in the
home as curtains, bed sheets,
faulty wiring and heating
systems, combustible mater
ials near exposed fires, faulty
chimneys and cooking equip
ment. No mention is made ot
carpets.

OUS Extension nutrition spe

to stamp "color added" on
artificially colored fruit. The
U.S. Food and Drug Adminis

these food additives. A few

were banned and new ones

Executve Man's Dress
Rated by Secretaries.
By GAY PAULEY
UPI Women's Editor ,
New York - (UPD - If there's
man in your life, read on.
And clip this section if you

GiyFaulO' so long the

shoes which haven't been
shined since they came from
the store.
A lot of people are paying
attention these days not only
to feminine chic, but also to
the well-dressed man.
At the moment on this desk
are the results of a rating of
executive dress by Today's
Secretary, a publication
which questioned the girls
Friday, plus a report from a
clothing executive that wives
frequently consider their hus
bands something less than
Beau Brummels, and com
ment from a male fashion
analyst on some' of the rights
and wrongs of men's wear.
Rate Well
The secretaries mostly
rated their bosses as well
turned out. Some wives
thought their husbands awful
dressers. To Perkins H.
Bailey, the analyst and execu
tive editor at Men's Wear, a
trade publication, one of the
worst style sins is the leg-show-hairy
calf above the
socks.
A questionnaire sent to
secretaries brought 381 re
plies. To the question, "does
your boss dress well?" 336,
or 88.2 per cent said yes. Ten
per cent said no, the rest said
fair or sometimes, and one
secretary reported her boss
looked like an unmade bed.
A few brushed off the ques
tion of hair grooming with
the cruel comment, "he hasn't
any:" ,
Just what are the charac
teristics of the well-dressed
man? Bailey listed them as
"natural, responsible, orderly,
well-groomed."
"Not," he said, "the fashion
plate or the all fashioned-up
look."
Individuality Noted
He Indicated Individuality
was one strong factor if the
man is sure of himself. He
mentioned one wealthy man
who breaks the rules on for
mal wear and wears red
socks.
For the office, he suggested
black, navy, gray or dark
brown hosiery, but for out
doors, pattern and color are
right.
"Shoes should always be
shined," he said. "You'd be I
amazed at those that aren't.
"A too long jacket detrncts
from a man's height. It should
just cover the seat.
"I hate to see ' a jacuet
sleeve end in nothing. There
should be a little cuff showing-half
an inch to an inch.
"A necktie should not de
stroy the personality of the
wearer, but choice of tie de
pends on the color of the
shirt, the color of the suit, the
occasion, individual taste.
"Trouser length should
break at the instep, not stack
up on the feet."
