Ever Wonder About the
Many Usee oi Bamboo?
Sometime or other you
have probably eaten bamboo
sprouts which were the
chewy hunks in your chop
suey. They had a peculiar,
and a pleasant cruchiness, as
well as an exotic taste. Like
asparagus, bamboo sprouts
pop up from underground
roots and are picked when
young and tender. They are
considered a delicacy.
And too, just about every
one has used or seen bamboo
fishing poles. Those two uses,
as far as most of us are con
cerned, Just about finish off
the bamboo business. Of
course, in the warmer sec
tions of the U. S., clumps of
bamboo were used as wind
breaks, or as ornamentals in
gardens.
Peoples in tropical coun
tries, as well as in most sec
tions of the Orient, have
found hundreds of uses for
bamboo; as water troughs,
spear handles, props for lean
ing or tired buildings, and as
matting for floor coverings,
screens and an almost un
limited number of other,
everyday uses.
Never Imporianl
But here in America the
plant known as bamboo, was
never considered very im
portant. Song writers once
gave their work a romantic
twist by writing some non
sense about "being under the
bamboo tree." This was pret
ty wide of the true facts
for bamboo is not a tree; its
a grass.
Under half-way favorable
conditions, bamboo will grow
ljuickly and in great patches
several acres in extenL Even
under a half-harted system of
cultivation, the supply of
bamboo is almost limitless.
There are areas in Florida
and other warmer sections of
America where this plant
grows in great abundance.
So, it was only natural that
some bright individual should
come up with a really useful
idea as to what to do with
this fast growing grass
At first the idea didn't
catch on. It didn't sound very
practical, but they tried. Even
the originator of the idea was
surprised at the result.
They placed blades of bam
boo in cement as a reinforcing
material. Steel has always
performed this valuable func
tion, but bamboo is said to
be exceedingly good. The re
inforced concrete is as strong
as that in which steel is used.
Scaled in concrete, the bam
boo appears to be impervious
to water, and of course it nev
er rusts. It is light, adding
only a little to the total
weight. Protected from air,
insect and fungus damage, it
is believed to last as long
as wire or steel. The one big
advantage, of course, is the
cost, which is very little. The
labor cost of planting, cutting
and preparing is much less
than any manufactured arti
cle. The use of bamboo in re

Hearing Scheduled
Salem - The Oregon Wage
and Hour commission will
hold a public hearing in Port

the employment of minors in
recreational occupations on
waterfronts. Mrs. Eugene S.
Kclty, commission chairman,
has called the meeting for
10 a.m. in Room 36 of the
State Office building.
Labor Commissioner Nor
man O. Nilsen says the hear
ing will review the request
of fishing resort and boat rent
al operators for more relaxed
and concise regulations on
waterfront employment of mi
nors. He states the commission
is considering issuance of per
mits for 16 and 17-year-olds
to work on fishing and pleas
ure boats.
It also will hear evidence
concerning employment needs
of 14 and 15-year-olds in the
waterfront jobs that do not
require work on boats at the
docks. Nilsen is executive sec
retary of the commission.

inforcing saves a great
amount of steel for other, and
more critical uses.
Even the boys that thought
of the idea and performed
the original experiments, ad
mit it is still a little too early
to become overly enthusias

for reinforcing the walls of
a building or a pavement.
There does seem to be possi

It's remarkable how an idea,

often grows and develops into
a healthy adult and becomes
a product of universal impor
