Course Is Planned for Youth
The Jackson County chap
ter of the American Red Cross
Is planning a Youth Aquatic
Course to be conducted at
Southern Oregon college and
Emigrant lake from June 9
through June 15 for young
people 15 years of age or
more.
This is the second year that
such a program has been car
ried out, and this year stu
dents from Douglas, Klamath
and Josephine counties are in
vited to participate, accoiding
to Mrs. Roy Wilkes, director
of the school.
Students whose skills qual
ify them for the program will
live on the campus for one
week, during which time they
will have an opportunity to
receive instruction in first
aid, canoeing, basic boating,
sailing, junior or senior life
saving, or training as water
safety aides or water safety
instructors.
Considerable interest has
been expressed in the small
craft program since it is the
only chance the youth in this
area have for such training.
Certificates will be awarded
during a graduation cere
mony on the last evening of
the program to those indi
viduals satisfactorily complet
ing courses, Mrs. Wilkes said.
The training program was
established in an effort to
qualify youngsters to serve as
volunteers at youth camps,
pools and recreation areas
throughout the community. It
was designed to help make in
dividuals safe while in, on or
about the water and train
them to assist others in
trouble.
Swimming and related
aquatic activities rank high in
the recreational pursuits of
the average American family,
and particularly in southern
Oregon, Mrs. Wilkes noted,
therefore it is imperative that
everyone learn to swim as
well as possible and know1
how to remain afloat and
calm in emergency situations, j
Should Contact Office !
Young people 15 yearn of
age or more, interested in in
creasing their aquatic skills
by participating in the course,
should contact the Jackson 1
county chapter of the Ameri
can Red Cross for application
forms and additional informa
tion. Swimming ability tests
will be arranged in advance
of the program to determine
the level of training each stu
dent will receive.
The Jackson County Ameri
can Red Cross Youth Aquatic
Course will be limited to 40
students this year, so anyone
interested should contact the
Red Cross office as soon as
possible by telephoning 772-4405.
