Soloist
Announced
Miss Signe Lusk, ninth
grade Hcdrick Junior High
school student will be one of
two soloists to appear in the
Medford High school orches
tra concert Monday, May 20 at
8 p.m., in the high school audi
torium. Phillip Frohnmayer,
a high school sophomore, will
be the other soloist.
Miss Lusk, a pianist, will
play the first movement of
Grieg Piano concerto in A
minor. She is a student of Sis
ter Miriam Joseph.
John E. Drysdale will con
duct the orchestra. Tickets
for adults are available at
Puruckers Music house, Lusk
Piano Music company and
Emerald Music company.
Students will be admitted
without charge.
Herb Society
Program Lists
'Rocambole'
Rocambole, one of the garlic-like
herbs, will be fea
tured at the next meeting of
the Rogue Valley Herb so
ciety, Tuesday, May 21 in the
Girls Community club. The
1:30 p.m., meeting will open
with members naming wild
herbs as they respond to roll
call. Mrs. R. D. Abel, presi
dent, will preside.
Mrs. Otto Nagel will give
the report on rocambole, and
the May flower arrangement,
which is to feature mullein
and Mayapple will be ar
ranged by Mrs. Abel.
The lecture by Mrs. Frank
Carson will be on the book
"Old Herbaclous." Mrs. L. R.
Thomas is scheduled to give
the Herb Growers review re
port. Hostesses will be Mrs.
Nagel and Mrs. Melchior
Heckenberger.
At a recent meeting of the
society a film on the Tilla
mook cheese factory was pre
sented by Mr. and Mrs. John
Dodge, and the afternoon's
topic was related to herbed
cheeses. Hostesses were Mrs.
Ostrander and Mrs. Ray Cyr,
who used cheeses for the re

ican Revolution at a meeting
of Crater Lake chapter Sat
urday. May 25, at 1:30 p.m.
at the Girls Community club.

both of Ashland, will sing a
group of spring songs.

Oriental Decor Marks
Junior-Senior Dance
Ashland-Senior students at
Ashland high school were
feted in Oriental splendor at
the annual Junior-Senior
Prom given May 11 in Britt
ballroom by their junior class
hosts.
Highlight of the occasion
was crowning of the 1963
queen and her royal court of
Washington
PTA Installs
New Officers
Mrs. Fred Sears was in
stalled president of the Wash
ington School Parent Teacher
association when the unit held
its last meeting of the sea
son recently.
Other officers installed
were Mrs. Rollie Pean, vice
president; Mrs. Derald
Wooten, secretary; and Mrs.
Sanford Bishop, treasurer.
Mrs. Alva Bradford, past
president, conducted the installation.
Guest speaker, John Smock.
was introduced by Mrs. Merle
Perkins, program chairman.
Mr. Smock, a teacher at the
Medford High school, spent
last year in Australia as a Ful
bright exchange teacher. Mr.
Smock explained some of the
academic differences in their
educational system as com
pared to Medford's. It was ex
plained that the students must
pass a final examination in
their senior year if they wish
to attend the university. He
noted that the senior year is
called "cram year" and is in
preparation for examinations
in all subjects, all of which
must be passed to enable the
student to enroll in a univer
sity. Schools tr- in session all
year with ten day holidays
between each of the three
semesters.
Mr. Smock mentioned that
discipline begins at home and
that the students are very
well mannered in school, but
he illustrated that the stu
dents are not without a sense
of humor by relating his
initial reception by them his
first day of teaching.
At the . ose of his talk Mr.
Smock answered questions
from the audience.
' Musical entertainment was
furnished by Washington
grade school band under the
direction of Albert Hunte-
mann. Mrs. Janet Smith's Cub
pack 10 presented colors.
Refreshments were served
before the meeting.

Pledge Service
A pledge service will be
conducted by Mrs. Malcolm
Hammond for the Ruth Es
ther Wesleyan Service guild
of First Methodist church
Monday, May 20. The group
will meet at' 7:30 p.m., in
Wesley hall of the church for
a social hour. Mrs. Hammond
is from the Ashland First
Methodist church.
A business session will be
conducted in the Meeker
chapel with Miss Carol Den-
ney, president, conducting.
All employed women of the
church are invited to join
the group for the evening.

Nill, Mrs. Gladys Mayficld
and Mrs. Alberta Broadman
Final plans will be made
for a rummage sale to be held
Saturday, May 25 in the Fehl
building.

arm bouquet of red carnations
was presented to the blonde
queen after her coronation as
she and her escort. Gene
Cronin of Medford, led her
court to the dance floor.
Background for the cere
mony was a Chinese graden
complete with pool, trees,
gold fish and floating blos
soms. Replica of a pagoda, a
rustic ormge and soft lights
gave realistic setting for the
spectacular event.
Arriving guests were greet
ed by sophomore girls in
scarlet Mandarin coats who
showed them to their tables
where fans and chopsticks
were favors and Ming trees
were centerprieces. An elabor
ate large colored lantern hung
irom tne ballroom canopied
ceiling and smaller lanterns
illuminated the table area.
Fountains, pink flamingos and
exotic plants bordered the en
trance bridge.
Music for the Prom was
furnished by the New Jazz
septet under the direction of
Raoul Maddox. Miss Connie
Felgcr, social chairman of the
junior class was chairman of
the decorating commit tee.
Terry Skibby, junior class
president, served as master of
ceremonies for the coronation.
Faculty members and parents
of class officers and the royal
court were guests of honor.
Miss Karen Wood knelt on a velvet cushion to receive
her crown and title as queen of the 1963 Junior-Senior Prom
of Ashland High school. Miss Wood was crowned by Terry
Skibby, president of the Junior class, and her escort was
Gene Cronin, Medford.
