grim task o sifting through
mangled debris in hopes of
determining what caused a
United Arab Airlines plane to
explode "like fireworks" in
the air, killing all 32 persons
aboard.
The twin-engine Dakota, en
route from Cairo to Alex
andria, blew up during a dust
atorm Sunday night shortly
after takeoff. Burning debris
and pieces of shattered bodies
were scattered through a
lemon grove surrounding this
village 20 miles north of
Cairo.
United Arab Airlines iden
tified two of the victims as
American Albert Lion and
his wife, Gloria. The UAA of
fice in New York said they
believed the Lions were from
Baltimore, Md.
The plane was carrying 2B
passengers and 4 crewmen.

Two teams of American moun
taineers were reported mak
ing steady progress today in
their attempt to climb Mt.
Everest from two different di
rections and meet on the sum
mit.
Radio reports from the base
camp of the U. S. Everest
expedition said Dr. William
Unsoeld, 36, Corvallis, Ore.,
and Dr. Thomas F. Hornbein,
32, San Diego, had reached
Camn Three on the unexplor
ed west ridge of the 29,028-
foot peak, tallest in the world
Barry C. Bishop, 30, Wash
ington, D. C, and Luther G,
Gerstad, 28, Eugene, Ore.,
were reported to have reached
Camp One on the traditional
route through the South Col
(pass).
The two teams hoped to
rendezvous at the top May 21,
according to the radioed re
ports. If both teams meet at the
summit, they plan to return
together down the south col
route. If they fail to make con
tact, however, each will re
turn the way it came.
One exoedition member,
James W. Whittaker, 32, Red
mond, Wash., became the first
American to scale Mt. Everest
May 1, when he reached the
top with Nepalese Sherpa
Guide Nowang Gombu.

awards for outstanding con1
tributions to the Oregon
Heart association at the as
sociation's 15th anniversary
meeting in Portland on May
22.
Election of new board mem
bers and installation of new
officers for the organization,
as well as committee reports,
are on the agenda for the
business session.
The annual meeting, which
is being separated this year
for the first time from the
! association's annual scientific
session, will honor founders,
members of the original board
and past board chairmen.
The Alpha Phi sorority will
also be honored tor its 1 5
years' participation in the
agency's program.
The scientific session will
be held May 24 and 25.

of seven Oregon lawyers who
have been named associate
members of the American Bar
association's new committee
on defense of indigent persons
accused of crime.
They will direct a detailed
survey of current legal serv
ices available to poor persons
in Oregon courts. Similar stu
dies are getting under way in
the other 49 states, it was re
ported. Data developed will form
the basis for major associa
tion and state bar programs
designed to assure adequate
legal service for all defend
ants in criminal cases.
