Paternal Vespers
The mills of the office gods today
Were full of sand and rocks.
Behold our hero, limp from the fray
And tired to his sagging socks.
So home he wends with a dragging tongue,
Almost ready to flop,
To meet the cries of his eager young:
"Ride us piggyback, Pop!"
-Georgia Starbuck Galbraith
A tourist got mixed up at a detour and
found himself hopelessly lost one night.
He stopped at a roadside home to make
inquiries of a woman rocking on the porch.
"Am I going in the right direction for
the city?" he asked.
"Which way are you headed?" the lady
questioned.
Not sure of directions, the man tried
again. "Just tell me if my lights are point
ing the right way."
"Oh, they're pointing the right way,"
she replied. And then as he started off,
she added, "At least the red ones are."

Husbands' Springtime Fancy
Hail the season soft and vernal,
Wften husbands sing of joys eternal.
And cry (unstrung by spring's fell spark)
"Fly with me to the baseball park!"

The six-year-old boy was painfully self
conscious about his first pair of eyeglasses.
When the little girl next door asked him
about them, he tried to pass them off
lightly. "Oh, I don't wear them always.
Just for close work, the doctor says."
"What close work?" his girl friend
asked.
"Well," stammered the youngster, "I
guess it's eatin' and stuff like that."

Smooth are the roads designed for wheels,

". . . two ounces strawberry sirup . . . four ounces malted
milk . . . say, where did you get this prescription?"
"Billy," said the teacher, "what is meant by the word
'relax'?"
"Don't know," mumbled Billy.
"Well, what does your father do every evening after
work?" the teacher continued helpfully.
"Gee," said Billy in surprise, "that's what Mom's trying
to find out, too!" F, G. Kernan
You may not approve of the
age-old Catholic devotion to the
Blessed Virgin.
Perhaps you have heard and
believed that this is "un-Scrip-rural"
. . . that Catholics are trying
to establish Mary as a divine per
son equal in power to God.
But if you will look at the facts,
you will see that these things are
not true... and you will realize
that Mary can exert a wonderful
influence in your personal life.
It certainly is not "un-Scrip-tural"
to recognize that Mary is
the Mother of Jesus Christ. If we
are to be truly "Scriptural," we
must further acknowledge that
Christ is the eternal Son of the
eternal Father a Divine Person
Who assumed a human nature like
ours in all things except sin. And
while Mary did not give Jesus His
divine nature, the Savior was her
Son... as truly as anyone is the
son of his own mother.
In vipw nf fhp mirhc hnw run
I anyone look upon Mary as just an
other woman, or just another
mother? Why should we hesitate
to honor one whom God so greatly
honored . . . and upon whom He
conferred a surpassing holiness
and complete freedom from sin?
Why should we believe that one
so dose to the Son of God in His
earthly life is not close and dear to
Him in His eternal Kingdom?
It is erroneous, of course, to
think that Catholics worship Mary
as a divine person. But we do love
and venerate her for the unique
place she occupies in God's plan
for our salvation ... for her inti
mate association with the all-holy
Son of God... for her own holi-
But, you may say why pray to
Mary when we can pray direcdy
to God, as the Scriptures com
mand? The answer is that Cath
olics do pray to God. They seek
from Him grace and forgiveness
blessings which only God can
grant. But no law of God com
mands us, when we go to Him in
prayer ... that we must go alone.
Like St. Paul, we believe in pray
ing for others and having others
pray for us. And whose prayers
could find greater favor in the
sight of God than those of the
Mother of His Divine Son?
These are the chief reasons for
the world-wide Catholic devotion
to the Blessed Virgin and why
millions in every land and lan
guage are heard to pray:
"Hail, Mary, full of grace! the
Lord is with thee; blessed art thou
amongst women; and blessed is
the fruit of thy womb, Jesus . . ."
The name of the Blessed Virgin
is in the headlines these days...
and people everywhere are discuss
ing her place in Catholic devo
tions. We will send you a pam
phlet about Mary's place in the
Christian creed. Nobody will call
on you. Write today for Pamphlet
