Washington, D. C. The

the possibly mischievous by
a high fence and alert guards.
There are conducted tours in
the morning, but we have not
yet taken one. So our first
trip to the White House a
week ago found us playing
the dual role of guests and
sightseers.'
The reception for Congress
is a traditional affair. Until
the Kennedy administration,
it was a white-tie-and-tails oc
casion, with the attendant for
mality of a receiving line.
Now, however, black tie is
designated, and some of the
ladies interpret this relaxing
of protocol to mean short
dresses also. By far the major
ity of the wives at last Thurs
day's soiree, however, wore
long gowns.
We were not greeted at the
door - nor anywhere, as- a
matter of fact, but simply
found our way down the cor
ridor and up the stairs to the
party. We were a bit early
and perhaps later guests re
ceived some guidance. There
were military men stationed

guests seemed to feel at home,

the White House.
Admire Decor
Wandering through the fa
mous rooms, we admired the
fresh and charming decor cre
ated by the First Lady. The
Blue Room, I may report, is
indeed mostly white, but is
saved by blue draperies and
other touches of its name col
or. With all the milling about,
I still do not have a clear
picture of the floor plan, but
there were two large cham
bers, in which buffet tables
were laid and orchestras play
ed, connected by three small
er rooms and a long corridor.
The rooms filled up magi
cally with members of Con
gress, the Cabinet, and the
White House staff. We glimps
ed Vice President Johnson and
Secretary Dillon (Treasury)
and talked . with Secretaries
Freeman and Udall (whom we
had met when he spoke in
Portland a couple of years
ago).

naled the arrival of the Presi
dent. He evidently was imme
diately surrounded, for he got
no farther than the first room
for quite a while. Some of
us who were waiting just out
side the door finally gave up
and went back to our conver
sation or dancing. The Presi
dent did not attempt to make
the rounds but stayed long
enough to shake many hands
and chat a little before going
back upstairs to the private
rooms occupied by the First
family. We were lucky just at
the last to be able to shake
his hand and wish him well.
Mrs. Kennedy, of course,
did not appear. That she could
not was a disappointment to
all, particularly to those new
wives who have not yet met
the fabulous First Lady. How
ever, there were none among
us who did not understand
and sympathize with her rea

taxing social affairs she must
ordinarily attend. And we are

Pleasant Evening
Altogether, it was a vbry
pleasant evening. We are ac

and Mrs. Lyndon Johnson (center.)

and we found it easy to be

The -Informality encouraged
self - introductions, and we
were thus able to meet the
Willard Wirtz's (Secretary of
Labor) with whom we have
mutual friends in Illinois.
They are friendly, charming
people, as are most of those
we have met In "official cir
cles." One of the warm divi
dends of meeting famous peo
ple is that they are so rarely
self-important, no matter how
actually important in their
field. People in high places
seem to have a well develop

tant everybody is - each' in
his own place in this universe
of ours.
On our way out we Paused
in the famous Fireside room
to take a deep breath of his
tory and remember the great
President who made it fa
mous. We stopped by an ad
jacent chamber to say "hello"
to Senator Maurlne Neuber
ger, Mrs. Claude Pepper (wife
of the congressman from Flor

the china patterns used by
While House occupants from
George Washington down
through General Eisenhower,
which were displayed in wall
cabinets. Bob's favorite was
Harry Truman's - mine was
Herbert Hoover's! No doubt
a result of my staunch Repub
lican upbringing.
No shiny limousine swept
up to the door to carry us
away; as a matter of fact, we
walked down the path and out
the gate, to our car, saying
