Medford's Mike Deibele ran

yard dash in Oregon this sea.

Black Tornado trimmed the
Grants Pass Cavemen in a
rain - swamped track meet
which produced remarkable
times despite adverse condi
tions. A water-logged track was

Medford sprint man. He

long in 21.8 to establish a new
dual meet mark.
One other record tumbled
and one was tied and their

were canceled because of the

record of 4:28.7 in the mile.
Deibele knotted the meet's
300-yard dash standard with

Rick Larson and Jim Hill
won the relay in 1:33.
Grants Pass swept the dis
cus as well as the high jump.
Constant Rain
Rain came with thunder
claps' as the meet got under
way and it fell heavily and
constantly through' the twi-
liglit event. The track was
soon a moss of pools and riv
ulets and the north turn in
side lanes were under water,
A soaked runway, watery
pit and loose jumping board
brought cancellation of the
broad Jump and the wet run
way and slippery poles result
ed in the pole vault being
eliminated. It was figured that
the elimination of these events
balanced out, anyway. Grants
Pass was the favorite in the
vault and Medford in the
jump.
Medford clinched the win
by taking the relay, next to
last event to be recorded.
Greg Swenson of the Tor
nado ran a good 4:37 mile
in taking second place in that
event. And, Doug Eakin came
close to giving the Medfords
a mile sweep. He ran in 4:42
and was barely held off by
GP"s Tom Woods.
Brumback came back after
winning the; mile to run a
strong second place in the
half.
Deibele's 220 was just .1
second over the school record
of 21.7 by Rich Riggs in 1949.
It was also .1 faster than a
21.9 this season by Leon Lin
coln, Jefferson.

Salyer was a triple winner
for the Chiefs. He cleared the
pole vault bar at 12 feet 2
inches and ran the low hur
dles in 20.15, both records,
and took the high hurdles in
15.1. Salter set a new mile
standard of 4:38.6 and won the
half-mile in 2:03.6.
Dead Heat In 100
Rogue River's Chris Jones
dead-heated with Jim Webb,
St. Mary's, in 10:15 in the
100-yard dash. Webb later
won the 220 in 23.2.
St. Mary's had four un
shared firsts in the meet,
Phoenix three and Lakeview
one.
John Granby, Phoenix, and
Tom Darland, St. Mary's,
tallied double victories. Gran
by chalked up one of the four
records with a 52-5 shot put
and won the discus with 126
8. Darland took the broad
jump at 20-9 and the 440 in
51.7. Rick Richey was victor
in the javelin for Phoenix at
166-10 and Fred Williams,
Lakeview, was high jump
winner at 5-6.
St. Mary's team of Pete
Naumes, Tim Sakrada, Dar
land and Webb won the re
lay in 1:36.4.
Rogue River clinched the
meet with first, fourth and
fifth in the half-mile. The 16
points gave the Chiefs of
Coach Frank Moore's 111 15
points to SMs with only the
relay left.
district meet at Myrtle Creek
next Saturday.

Lipscomb, who gained star
dom with the Baltimore Colts
before they traded him to the
steelers in 1961, was found
unconscious and breathing
heavily while seated at a ta
ble in the kitchen of a friend's
apartment early Friday morn
