Jacksonville Plans Calling (or Bids
Jacksonville - City council-
men here hope to issue a call
for bids on construction of the
city's sewer system at their
regular meeting scheduled
June 4.
Councilmen had planned to
call for bids at a meeting
Tuesday night, but City At
torney Ervin B. Hogan in
formed them that several tech
nicalities must be cleared up
before bids can be sought.
Cost of the sewer system is
now estimated at $4u,auu,
compared to the original cost
estimate of $358,000. A major
portion of the increase was at
tributed to the estimated cost
of the lagoons, which has gone
up from $27,000 to $65,000,
because soil tests showed the
earth to be more porous than
earlier believed.
The council called a special
meeting Friday night, at
which time additional study
of assessments will be made
and consulting engineers will
be present.
The special meeting also is

the National Council for
Small Business Management

cessful firing of a Minutcman
missile from this Pacific
Coast missile base was report
ed Wednesday by the Air
Force.
The solid fuel interconti
nental ballistic missile thun
dered some 5,000 miles down
the Pacific range from its 85
foot deep silo shortly before
sundown.
The Air Force said the test
appeared to be a "complete
success," and that the reentry
vehicle impacted in the pre
selected target area in the Pa
cific. No specific details were
given on accuracy.
It was the first time the
launch of a Minutcman had
been handled in all phases by
Strategic Air Command
team, the Air Force said.

eradicate a new strain of
meningitis believed responsi
ble for an epidemic of the
disease.
A total of 24 recruits have
been stricken at the center
this year despite repeated
mass doses of sulfadiazine,
normally effective against
meningitis. Three of the vic
tims died.
Cmdr. Jack M. Millar, di
rector of preventive medicine
of the Navy's Bureau of Medi
cine and Surgery, concluded
the epidemic was caused by
a new strain of meningitis.
Millar said recent experi
ments have shown that peni
cillin is much more effective
against this strain than sulfadiazine.
