Jackson, Neal, Thomas Team
As Mets Retain Respectability
By FRED DOWN
UPI Sports Writer
Cascv Stengel, master, of
the non sequltor, reserves one
of his best for pitcher Al JacK.
son of the New York Mcts.
"If he wasn't a let-handcr,"
' V"1'
says Stengel, "you'd think he
was a ball player."
What Stengel means Is that
the 27 -year-old native of
Waco, Tex., moves with such
grace that he would be mis
taken for a shortstop for a
second-baseman - except, of
course, for the fact he's left
handed. As it is, Jackson Is
a pitcher and he's turning out
to be a mighty good one, too.
A 20-game loser for the for
lorn Mcts of 1062, Jackson
posted his third win against
two defeats this year when he
beat the Philadelphia Phillies,
3-1, Tuesday night. Jackson
allowed 11 hits, including
three doubles and a triple,
and the Phillies had a runner
in scoring position in five of
the first eight innings but they
didn't score until Bobby Wine
homered in the ninth.
Honiara Provide Runs
Charlie Neal hit an inside-the-park
homer and Frank
Thomas hit a two-run homer
in the first inning to provide
all three runs for the Mcts,
who have won four of their
last seven games to achieve a
respectability they never had
in '62. Nobody Is rating them
a first-division threat in the
strong NF but they're no
longer the patsies that drove
Stengel whacky last year.
Sandy Koufax and Bob Pur
key, two pitchers who could
be of key importance in the
pennant race, provided en
couraging news Tuesday night
for the Los Angeles Dodgers
and the Cincinnati Reds)
Koufax, sidelined since May
23, pitched a five-hitter for
eight innings as the Dodgers
clobbered the St. Louis Cardi
nals, 11-1, while Purkcy, out
since spring training with a
lame arm, yielded four hits
and one run in 5W innings
and left the game with the
lead even though the Houston
Colts rallied to top the Reds,
3-2.
Washburn Loses First
The San Francisco Giants
went back into first place
with a 5-2 win over the Mil
waukee Braves and the Chi
cago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh
Pirates, 5-4, in other NL
games.
The Dodgers backed Kou
fax with a 13-hlt attack that
included three hits by Ron
Fairly, a homer by Tommy
Davis, a triple by Johnny
Roseboro and three doubles.
Ray Washburn, who had won
five straight games, was
routed in three innings and
suffered his first defeat.
Purkey turned over a 2-1
lead to his successor but the
Colts rallied for two runs on
singles by Jim Campbell,
Johnny Temple, Bob Lillis
and Rusty Staub in the eighth
to hand Joey Jay, a 21-game
winner in each of the last two
seasons, his sixth straight de
feat of 1063. ,
Juan Marichal pitched a
four-hitter and Felipe Alou,
Ed Bailey and Jose Pagan
homered for the Giants, who
replaced the Pirates in first
place. Hank Aaron homered
for the Braves, who saw Lew
Burdette's record squared at
3-3.
Larry Jackson pitched a
five-hitter and struck out
seven and Ernie Banks homer
ed for the Cubs, who have
won seven of their last eight
games. Roberto Clemente and
Smoky Burgess homered for
the Pirates

If we do not get any heavy
rain, the game likely will
be played."
That was the outlook from
Crater High Coach Bill Piche
concerning the Comet's South
ern Oregon conference base
ball game scheduled for 4
p.m. at Central Point Thurs
day with Medford.
Weather reports indicated
some shower activity in this
area up to noon Thursday.
The Crater field was water
logged, particularly in left
field, by Monday and Tues
day rains.
Larry Pepper is the proba
ble pitcher for Crater if the
teams play tomorrow. Coach
John Kovenz indicated that
the Medford twirler will be
either Stuart Young or Bill
Enyart.
The early week rains wash
ed out Medford's action with
Klamath lulls Tuesday along
with Crater play against Del
Norte and Ashland action with
Yreka high.
Kovenz said that his Med
ford charges, however, got in
a pretty good drill yesterday.
They worked out in the out
field area.
Piche reported that, if the
Crater - Medford game can
not be contested Thursday, it
will be ' moved to Monday,
May 13. The clubs also are to
meet on Tuesday, May 14, at
Central Point.
Medford and Klamath Falls
junior varsities got in a sin
gle game at Klamath Falls
yesterday although rain-halts
prolonged the seventh inning.
A rain victim also was the
Hedrick - McLoughlin ninth
grade track meet which had
been slated for the Medford
high stadium. The meet has
been postponed until next
Tuesday.

The Daily Newspaper
Is the Flexible Medium
for Pinning Down Sales
Newspapers don't tie up the advertiser with rigid lime

and effectivenest of hit menage. Newspaper! offer crea
tive and physical flexibility. An advertiser can use a two
page spread to tell a detailed story or he can use a smaller
space to say what he wants in fewer words, depending
on his budget and his strategy. The physical flexibility of
newipapers means ads can be scheduled quickly to take
care of sudden telling opportunities. The daily newspaper

Los Angelcj - IDPD - Pitcher
Bob Turley of the Los An

though he might be regaining
the form that won him the
nickname "Bullet Bob" when
he was with the New York
Yankees.
Turley, 1-3. pitched his
first Angel victory Tuesday
night and it was a lulu
l three-hit 2-0 whitewashing
of the Mineapolis Twins. He
struck out nine men and walk'

"That's the greatest game
I ever pitched," said Turley,
"and that Includes the World

Turley, 32, in his 12th ma

The big righthander had an
