Ho-HiUer for Crater High
2ND NO-HITTER Wayne
Clay, above, pitched his sec
ond no-hit baseball game for
Crater high in four days
when the Comets beat Ash
land 6 to 1 at Central Point
Tuesday. The Grizzlies got
the one run on walks and er
rors. Comet Baseballers
Defeat Ashland 6-1,
3-0 in Doublebill
Central Point - It's two no
hit baseball triumphs back to
back for Crater high pitcher
Wayne Clay.
Clay, who held Grants Pass
hitless and runless last Satur
day, no-hitted the Ashland
Grizzlies in the opening fracas
here yesterday afternoon as
the Comets of Central Point
swept a doutiebill in the
Southern Oregon conference.
Score was 6 to 1 in the
opener. Larry Pepper tossed
a three-hit 3 to 0 shutout for
the Fireballs in the second
game.
Clay walked in the only run
scored against the Comets yes
terday after two errors and a
base on balls had loaded the
bases. After that he retired
the last 14 men in order. He
struck out batters on 12 oc
casions and issued three bases
on balls.
Far Superior
"It's the first two no-hilters
back to back since Johnny
Vander Meer," commented
Crater Coach Bill Piche, who
pointed out that Clay's pitch
ing yesterday was far super
ior to his performance at
Grants Pass.
Piche declared that the
Comets are real proud' of
Clay's ' accomplishment and'
happy for him but remarked
that undue pressure will be
on him now. "Everybody
stepping into the batter's
box will be taking dead aim
at him," said the mentor. "We
hope that he'll just take it in
stride."
The pitcher also got two of
the six hits that the Comets
collected. Mike Glines, Darryl
Summerfield, Pat Pepper and
Willie Jones knocked the oth
ers. Glines' two-baser, a ground
out and a wild pitch scored
one marker for Crater in the
first inning. Singles by Clay
and Jones and a passed ball
went for a second inning run
and another in the fourth pan
el was on Summerfield's dou
ble, a groundout and Clay's
single. Three runs in the fifth
Inning widened the spread.,
They were on a base on balls,
two errors, Lou Alvarez's sac
rifice fly and Pepper's two
bagger. Ashland pitchers Dane
Smith and Bill Tilford com
bined for three strikeouts and
two bases on balls.
Pepper Fsm 13
Larry Pepper whiffed 13
batters and walked two in the
second tussle. His mound ad
versary, John Rhodes, who
threw a no-hitter against
Klamath Falls last Saturday,
registered eight strikeouts and
issued two free passes in a
five-hitter yesterday.
Crater put three of its hits
with a hit batter and a base
on balls for two runs in the
first inning. Glines singled,
Alvarez bunted safely and
Summerfield doubled. One
run In the third chukker was
on Summerfield's second safe
blow of the contest, an error,
a walk to Jones, steals by
Summerfield and Jones and
Neil Rivcnburg's groundout.
The other Comet hit of the
tangle was a two-base blow
by Glines.
The victories gave third
place Crater an 8-4 record in
the conference while Ashland
is In fourth spot with 2-8.
Fireball Coach Piche praised
a team effort in the double
win and expressed hope that
the Comets will keep it up
when they engage Medford at
Central Point on Saturday.

Mike Barnes led off the

He scored on a single by Dan
