Kiwanians Are Told
More Heaters May
Be Brought to Area
As a result of this year's
freezes, more heaters are go
ing to be brought into the
Rogue valley, Clifford B. Cor-
dy, Jackson county horticul
tural agent, ventured Wed
nesday in a talk at the noon
luncheon of Medford Kiwanis
club.
He indicated that, with the
fruit price structure the way
it is, the fruit industry can
not stand a situation like this
year's freezes and survive.
Cordy reported that there
are now 6,000 heaters in the
valley.
Using a chart and showing
a sample, Cordy reviewed
stages of bud, blossom and
young fruit development and
told of the effects of freezes
at various stages. He report
ed that some orchards lost
quite a few buds in the ear
ly stage and that quite a few
were lost again at a later
stage.
In Tender Stag
Last Saturday, with buds in
tender stage and temperatures
down to 22 degrees in some
places, considerable damage
was suffered. Most of the or
chards heated came through
with- a minimum of damage
and still have a crop, Cordy
said. He called the freeze a
"real tough" one.
Cordy spoke of the cold
and wet weather during the
bloom season hurting polleni
zation by holding down bee
activity.

The horticulturist outlined
the development of orchard
heating in the valley. He
pointed to the lessening of
smoke and brought out that
most of the developments of
modern techniques in heat

this valley. Jackson county
had the first fruit frost pro

United States, Cordy said.

FRIDAY. AMUL SI,
Student County
Judge Comments
On County Issues
The "county iudce for
day," Paul Braruom, Crater
High school student, Indicated
his opinions differ with those
of Country Judge Earl Miller
concerning some major coun
ty issues.
The county should hive a
multi-purpose stadium, ha de
clared shortly after "assum
ing office" Thursday during
Student Government day.
"People could get more en
joyment out of a stadium. I
don't think it would cost too
much money. Now we don't
have any lights so we can play
at night. I belong to a church
team. A stadium would bene
fit all of the county people."
However, he was non-committal
on county wide zoning.
It would depend on the type
of industry which comet into
Jackson county, he explained.
"1 don t know about air pol
lution regulation," he contin
ued. "Orchard heating gives
the kids a job. I make $75 to
$100 a season working on a
heating crew," Bransom ex
plained.
"Jackson county hat de
veloped quite a bit In recrea
tion since I was in the eighth
grade in Jacksonville," Bran
som added. "But I don't think
there should be overnight
camping charges at Lake of
the Woods as I read they
were going to do. It hinders
lots ot 'people who could use
the area."
With the aid of County
Judge Earl Miller and County
Commissioner Don Faber, the
acting court passed an order
to hold a public hearing May
IS, on a road vacation in the
Fair Oaks orchard tract.
The permanent county
court quickly followed this
action with their own resolu
tion setting the public hear
ing.
All matters considered by
the acting county court were
routine: recommendation on
liquor licenses, the road vaca
tion and consideration of a jet
Doai purcnase for the sheriff's
marine patrol.
Some observers felt the
high school students would
have received a more realistic
impression of the county court
(unctions if it had been con
fronted with some controver
sial county issues.
