Grant's Tricks at Vicksburg
By MERTON T. AKERS
UPI Correspondent
As April 1 063 waned. Maj.
pen. Ulysses S. Grant moved
his army south against the
Confederate stronghold of
Vicksburg. Mis?., and added
a touch of guile to confuse the
Rebels.
His transports had run the
batteries at Vicksburg safeiy
and lay on the west bank of
the Mississippi, battered but
usable, well below the city
and out of range.
Now it remained to march
his army through the bayous
of northern Louisiana across
the natives called roads but
nearly bottomless in mud.
" ' The corps- of Maj. Gen. I
John A. McClernand led the
expedition, bridffina bavous
and streams and corduroying
impassable roads with logs.
Part of the corps commanded
by Maj. Gen. James Birdseye
McPherson followed.
To cover h i s southward
march and throw dust into
the eyes of Confederate Lt.
Gen. John C. Pemberton, com
manding at Vicksburg, Grant
reached into his bag of tricks.
On Raiding Expedition
First he sem his cavalry on
a raiding expedition east of
Vicksburg.
Then he sent Maj. Gen. Wil
liam T. Sherman to make a
feint north of Vicksburg in
the neighborhood where Sher
man had failed in a drive
from the north at Christmas
lime.
The cavalry raiders started
April 17 - the day Grant's
transports had run the Vicks
burg batteries - from La
Grange, Term., on the Mississippi-Tennessee
line south
east of Memphis.
The raid was led by an un
likely character named Benja
min H. Grierson. He was
colonel of the 6th Illinois
Cavalry and at the moment
was commanding a brigade
lie started the raid with
his own regiment, the 7th Il
linois Cavalry, the 2nd Iowa
Cavalry, the 2nd Iowa Cav
alry and six guns - all told,
about 1.700 men.
Before the war Grierson
had been a music teacher in
Illinois and a part-time grocer

horses. His antipathy dated
from tile time he was a boy
w hen a horse kicked him in
the face and left a scar.
Troopers Rode South
Grieraon'i well - equipped
troopers, leading spare horses,
rode south from LaGranse
into the corridor between two
railroads-thc Mobile & Ohio,
which ran south from Cor
inth, Miss., through the cen
tral part of the state and the
Mississippi Central, which
ran south from Memphis
through Jackson, the Missis
sippi capital, and on into the
lower part of Louisiana.
On the second day out
Grierson ran into the first op
position, a militia cavalry
company near Ripley, Miss-, i
about 30 milag from La-
Grange This he brushed '
aside i
An April 20 Grierson cull-
ed out about 175 men who
ibOWCd 'signs of weakening
and sent them back with a
lew prisoners and a drove of
captured mules and horses to!
LaGrange under Maj Hiram
Love and the 2nd Iowa Love
was ordered to make a great
commotion to deceive the
Confederates into thinking
the expedition w-as turning
bark.
The next day Col Edward
Hatch took his 2nd Iowa east
broke the Mobile & Ohio :
near MacOQ, Miss Then he I

from the north near Haines' Bluff. The
raid and the feint were successful. Because
of them, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton, com
mander of the city, could muster only 4,000
to 6,000 men to oppose Grant's army of
40,000 crossing the Mississippi river. Here,
from the Library of Congress collection, is
a drawing of Sherman's attack at Haines'
Bluff. (UPI)
swung north tor a short dis
tance to decoy the pursuing
Rebel cavalry, which by this
time was swarming over the
countryside. After that he
joined the main body farther
south. Hatch succeeded so
well that Grierson's main
body was about 70 miles
farther south before the Con-
federates learned the truth.
One company of tiie 7th Illi
nois raided along the Mobile
& Ohio south of Macon and
eventually joined Grierson
when the main body had
swung west at Newton, Miss,
directly east of Vicksburg and
railroad running east from
Jackson and Vicksburg into
Alabama.
When Pemberton heard that
Grierson had turned west he
set a trap at Union Church,
Miss., southeast of. Grand
Gull, a Confederate strong
point on the Mississippi.
But a squad of nine volun
teers from the 7th Illinois,
led by Sgt. Richard Surby and
called the "Butternut Gueril
las" because they wore Con
federate uniforms, had been
ranging the country ahead of
Grierson. One of them learn
ed of the ambush. Grierson
turned back east to Brook
haven, Miss., and avoided the
trap.
From there Grierson fol
lowed the Mississippi Cential,
destroying ii as he went into
Louisiana and to Baton Rouge
where on May 2 he joined the
Federal forces of Maj. Gen.;
Nathaniel P. Banks.
The ex-music teacher who
disliked horses had raided for
600 miles in 16 days, had cut
three rail lines-, had torn up
60 miles of telegraph wire and
had isolated Jackson, the
capital, for several days.
Grierson's report was all
facts, no rhetoric."
"We killed and wounded
about 100 of the enemy." he
reported, "captured and
paroled over 500 prisoners
. . . destroyed over 3,000 stand
of arms . captured 1.000
horses and mules . . Our loss
was 3 killed, 7 wounded, 5
left en route sick . . . and 9
missing . . ."
One of his teen-age troop
ers, Henry C. Forbes, called
the raid "a strenuous game.
rather a bloody one. intensely
exciting, but not necessarily
very dangerous."
Grant called it "one of the
most brilliant cavalry exploits
of the war . . ."
The Columbus (Miss.) Re
public agreed with Grant, at
least in part.
". . . The boldest, and we
may say one of the most suc
cessful, raids of cavalry . . .
has been made (we say with
shame) through t h e very
center of Mississippi . . ."
After describing damage at
several places, the newspaper
said that in Starkville, Miss .
Hale & Murdock's hat wagon,
loaded with wool hats, pass
ing through at the time was
captured. They gave the hats
to the negroes and took the

added for good measure a

to fire up every forge and

"The gunboats and trans
ports whistled and puffed and
made all the noise they
could," Jenney continued.
"They showed themselves to
the garrison . . . and then
drifted back and landed the
men, who were marched
through the woods . . . until
they were seen by the enemy
. . . (and) taken on board to
go through the same farce
again."
The gunboats fired a few
shells the first day, April 30,
and a few more the next.
The Haines Bluff com
mander was impressed and
quickly called on Pemberton
for reinforcement. "Here is
the real attack," he said.
Pemberton promptly turn
ed back forces he had sent
south against. Grant's main
army.
The panting Confederate in
fantry dashed back to Haine's
Bluff in time to see Sherman's
men leave. Then Grant mes
saged Sherman:
"All right; join me below
Vicksburg."
Thanks to Sherman and
Grierson, Pemberton could
only muster 4,000 to 6.000
men to oppose Grant's cross
ing below Vicksburg.
