Many families are consid
ering vacation plans for the
approaching summer. Should
children be sent to camp? If
so, should it be a day camp
or sleep away camp?
The decision is influenced
by many circumstances. The
neighborhood facilities may
or may not be suitable for
summer activities. Some areas
become lonely during the
summer months These arc
important factors affecting a
child s welfare, but there are
also other considerations.

ihfi themselves. Tart ol tne
child s and parent's vacations
rnight b(- arranged to coincide.
In some cases, where both
parents must work during the
summer, camp may serve nn
important purpose.
Many children profit from
some kind of camp experi
ence. The preschool child is
probably not ready for a sleep
ii way camp He still needs the
security of being near his par
ents. He may not be redy
for group care where he will
not get the individual atten
tion he can obtain from par
ents. Perhaps a day camp is
advantageous for such a child.
Avoid Hasty Decision
There are many camps from
which to choose. Don't make
a hasty decision. The price
range is a personal matter,
but you will find many
choices You will hear of
camps from friends and
neighbors. Others can be lo
cated throuah advertisements,
camp information centers, and
camping associations.

Observations
Children
The camp should have ath
letic fields, hiking areas, lake
and sufficient indoor space
for evening and rainy day ac
tivities. There should be ap
proximately one athletic fa
cility for each 20 children
This should include a mini
mum of two baseball fields
a basketball court, a rifle
range, waterfront including
boats etc., tennis courts, vol
lev ball courts, and a flat
campus for various other ac
tivities. The staff should consist of
one counsellor for each five
children. Perhaps in younger
groups there should be one I
counsellor for three children
In addition specialists should
include an American Red
Cross water safety instructor,
arts and crafts, riflery, ten
nis, dramatics, music, and
others depending upon the
emphasis you and your child
desire.
Another overlooked but im
portant requirement is to
make sure that the camp will
have approximately 18 to 20
children in your child's age
group Teen-age girls want
social activities. Make sure
that there is an equivalent
age group of boys.
Camping is a rewarding ex
perience for many children. s u If a diazine tablets earlier
