Clean Up Before I Rewiring Rated
Fixing Up House First Requisite
In Spring Plans
THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 1963
Home improvement, clean
up, paint-up and light-up all
go hand - in - hand with the
coming of the spring season.
Spring-cleaning, particular
ly, is important, especially
when planning various remod
eling and repair jobs around
the house.
Home storage areas prob
ably have collected many
waste materials during the
winter months. These are un
sightly and are fire hazards
which should be removed
from the home and disposed
of immediately.
A good procedure to follow
in cleaning out storage areas
is to work in one room at a
time.
Clear it of old newspapers.
magazines, worn-out clothing,
unwanted furniture and the
countless other items that col
lect in a home. Cany these
materials outside and burn
or leave them for the refuse
collector.
In burning materials oul
s i d c the Some, remember
that trash fires themselves
may constitute fire hazards
if not kept under control
Conlrol Fires
One way to control trash
fires is to use galvanized steel
rubbish burners. These con
tainers have close-fitting cov
ers which keep dangerous
sparks from flying.
If it isn't posible or prac
tical to burn trash, put it In
covered galvanized steel ash
or garbage cans.
While filling family gar
bage containers, it might be a
good idea to inspect them for
fire safety. If they arc made
of flammable material or do
not have close-fitting covers
or side handles, replace them.
As trash removal is taking
place, carry a small notebook
in which to mark down places
and fixtures In the home that
are in need of repair.
Take care of as many of
then) as possible in spare time
now and fit the rest into the
spring and summer work
schedule.

Remodeling an older home
these days without rewiring
it might be compared 10 build

out a good plan for present
and future electrical house
hold needs is almost as ridiculous.
An ideal guide to follow
t when wiring or rewiring a
; house is the list of "Gold Me
dallion" Home Standards. A
i "Gold Medallion" is awarded
. by electric utilities to homes
that arc adequately wired,
equipped with modern elec
j trie appliances, and heated
1 electrically.
Here are some of the elec-
trie features a home owner
j can enjoy in a home that has
been remodeled for better
! electric living.
Full house power:
I room has outlets and
; enough for the many.
ances that make electric iiv
ing comfortable and conven
j ient. No point along the base
boards of any room is more
I than six feel from an electric
outlet.
Proper Lights
Above- average lighting:
Proper lighting is provided
for all family activities, in
cluding reading, shaving,
watching television, and en
tertaining. Good lighting in
side helps decorate each room.
Outside it adds dramatic ef
fects and discourages prowl-1
ers.
Electric heating and cool-1
ing: electric heat is clean,
quiet and comfortable: with I
air conditioning, it will have
perfect indoor "weather" all
year long. Windows stay shut
against outdoor noise, dirt,
and irritant.-- .such as pollen,
and there arc no uncomfort
able blasts of heat or chilly,
drafty floors and walls.
EASILY REACHED Dream closets come true with a place
for everything and everything within easy reach behind
handsome louvered doors. There's compartmentalized storage
space, adjusted to lit articles of clothing in assorted sizes
and shapes.

That, power companies say.
is the real answer to higher
electric bills, although basic:

Spring Is Time
To Moth Proof
Furs, Woolens
Spring is the ideal time to
moth - proof closets to help
give more protection for val
uable woolens and furs. Once
these are taken out of their
protective bags, they become
fair game for pesky moths.
One of the most effective
and economical ways to pro
tect all clothing is to install
aromatic red cedar linings in
closets. This easy - to - han
dle material, available in pre
packaged bundles at local
lumber dealers, can be install
ed right over closet walls. It
also can be nailed over open
framing in a new closet.
Kills Moths
The natural fragrance of
this distinctive southern wood,
so pleasing to humans - is
''death" to moths. It para
lyses them at an early stage.
Other qualities make ce
dar closets desirable as a
home feature include attrac
tiveness and easy upkeep. The
beautiful rose and white col
oring of the cedar grain pre
sents a handsome appearance
The wood requires very lit
tle care. No initial or period'
ie finishing of red cedar clos
et lining is required. The only
upkeep recommended is an oc
casional dusting.
Sturdy Build
Aromatic red cedar closet,
lining is tonguc-and-grooved
at sides and ends so that
pieces fit snugly. This not
only facilitates application,
but also makes for solid, un
broken surfaces.
Cedar closet lining can be
applied to plastered or fin
ished wallboard. Apply the
lining, which comes in 38"'
thick strips, horizontally on
the walls. Begin at the bot
tom and work up.
Place the first piece with
the groove edge on the floor
and the groove side against
the adjacent wall in the cor
ner. The tongue edges of this
piece will fit into the groove
end of the second piece. When
you are finished with the first
row. proceed on up the wall.
I lnSf.ua Cnrttrs
vjniy one nun di etien mihi
is needed to secure cedar
closet lining. The first row,
however, should have nails
near the top and bottom of
each piece. Usually studs are
located at the corner of an
existing closet. To verify this,
measure off 16 inches and
drive in a nail to sec if there
is solid backing.
To realize the maximum
moth - protection benefits
from a closet lined with aro
matic red cedar, follow these
general rules:
Air Tight
Keep the closet as air-tight
as possible. Close the door
securely after storing or re
moving articles.
Wipe the cedar occasional
ly with a dry cloth to remove
dust and dirt
Sand the wood lightly every
year or so to reopen any
closed wood pores and renew
the strength of the cedar fra
grance. Air dry or dry clean all ar
ticles before storing them.
An entire closet can be
lined over a week end for
approximately S50. In addi
tion to providing valuable
moth - free storage space, a
cedar - lined closet will in-

Glamour Bathrooms In
All House Pfennings
Interior decorators report
that "glamor" bathrooms can
now be included in remodeled
homes because modern build
ing materials and techniques
enable contractors to deliver
more value for the buyer's
dollar. Decorators point out
that only a few tasteful acces
sories are needed to complete
a bathroom that has been de
signed for both style and serv
ice.
Marble Favored
Leading designers are con
stantly introducing distinc
tive marble patterns, and even
handsome woodgrains, into
bathroom decor. These same
decorative themes can be in
corporated into almost any
home plan by using "Marlitc."
a predecorated hardboard pan
eling, available at lumber
dealers in 10 "companion col
ors," seven woodgrains and
six marble patterns.
Resist Acid
These panels, whose mar
ble and woodgrain patterns
arc authentic reproductions of
selected natural materials,
provide a "permanent decor"
becau.'ir they never need re
finishing. Their plastic-finish
mooth surface resists mois
ture, heat, stains, acid and
other hard wear. The panels
may be cleaned with an occa
sional damp wiping.
Among the new bathroom
treatments introduced by in
terior decorators arc rooms
with a marble-patterned wain
scot or accent wall. Rich cher
ry, natural walnut or striped
mahogany woodgrains also
are gaining popularity as a
bathroom wall paneling.
For those who prefer plain
colors, Marlite is available in
16 inch planks that arc par
ticularly effective in a small
er bathroom where alternat
ing pastel shades create a
feeling of spaciousness. These
planks may also be used
around the vanity, storage
space or dressing area in a
larger bathroom.

Air Conditioning Enriches Summer
Are you planning a com
plete air conditioning treat
ment for your home?
Where there is an obsolete
gravity furnace, or a worn
out forced air heating plant,
replacement with one of the
many top-flight year round
heating and cooling units, is
the most economical in the
long run.
If you plan to replace a
forced air furnace, you'll be
able to use existing ductwork.
Scrapping your old furnace
and streamlining basement
ducts may provide you with
an "extra" room for any
purpose you may choose.
Enjoy Warmth
Homes having "wet heat",
floor furnace or space heat
ers can enjoy warm weather
cooling with specific cooling
dehumldlfying units that arc
installed with a minimum of
ductwork. These usually are
connected to an outside re
frigerating unit.
Conversion to all-season
conditioning can be simple
with a forced air furnace
that's in good condition.
Central air conditioning in
stallations in existing homes
can be financed on FHA im
provement loans and in many
cases can be added to an ex
isting long-term mortgage.
Your professional air con
ditioning specialist can ad
vise you as to the most effici
ent and most economical in
stallation for your purposes.
Dependability, compactness
and economy are among the
advantages of gas-fired floor
furnaces. Depending on the
size of the home and the cli
mate, a single furnace may
meet all heating needs, or sev
eral may be employed.
