School Assemblies gave a pro
gram at St. Mary's High re
cently featuring novelty in
struments, showing how to
make each instrument, and
playing various tunes on each
one.

Juniors Mike Soran. Jeff Ran
dolph, and Mike Hutchinson,
attended a leadership confer
ence at St. Mary's Academy in
Portland recently. The pur
pose of the conference was to
promote Catholic leadership
among students.
Guest speaker for the day,
J. P. Smith, a Portland busi
nessman, social worker and
lay apostle, opened the session
with a talk on the qualities
of a good leader. Then the
council divided into discussion
groups and closed with a so
cial hour.
Nine weeks tests for the
third quarter were scheduled
recently. Reports were dis
tributed the following Mon
day during a home room per
iod in the morning and the
students received their grades
in each class during the day.
Application for honors were
filled out at the end of the
day and handed in to the
homeroom teachers.
Pat Fellers, junior, was in
Salem as the guest of Repre
sentative and Mrs. John R.
Dellenback. She. with an Ash
land High school girl, acted
as an honorary page in both
the House and Senate. After
noons and evenings were
spent attending committee
meetings.
The Dellcnbacks are invit
ing students from all the high
schools of the area with the
idea of increasing interest in
local and state government.
Pat stated that she had learn
ed many interesting and valu
able facts during the three
days, and that her interest in
political issues has been
heightened.

manage other surface resources
therof; and that, except to the ex
tent required for mining opera
tions and uses reasonably incident
thereto or to provide clearance for
such operations or uses, claimants
of such claims shall not use or dis
pose of vegetative or other sur
face resources thereof: and that,
except for clearance for such pur
pones, any permitted severance or
removal of timber must he in ac
cordance with sound principles of
forest management. Said section 4
also provides that any use of the
surface of any such mining claim
by the United States, its permit
tees or licensees, shall be such a
not to endanger or materially
interfere with the prospecting,
mining, processing or reasonably
incident uses by the mining claim
