Minnesota Election Night 135 Days Long
By WILLIAM FOX and
BOB DODOR
Uniled Press International
St. Paul, Minn - Wl - Elec
tion night in Minnesota was
a long one. It lasted 135 days.
In this stale, as elsewhere,
the day after election nor
mally dawns with a winner
graciously accepting the
plaudits of his supporters and
a loser quietly making other
plans for the future.
But last November, Min
nesota's gubernatorial race
ended in a virtual dead heat.
The state canvassing board
was unable to decide between
incumbent Gov. Elmer L. An
dcrson. a Republican, and
Democratic challenger Karl
Bolvaag. formerly the lieu
tenant governor.
On orders from the stale
supreme court, the board fi
nally declared Anderson the
victor by 142 votes. Rolvaag
demanded a recount.
Anderson Leads
With the tedious recount in
progress, Anderson continued
to hold sway in the carpeted,
heavily draped governor's of
fice while Rolvaag sweated
out the "anguish and uncer
tainties" of canvass from an
austere, "broom closet" of
fice in the capital's basement.
Then the outcome of the
recount hit the capitol like
bomb. Last month, Rolvaag
was declared the winner by
hair - thin margin 91
votes. Anderson moved out
and Rolvaag came upstairs.

journment expected by early
May at the latest. Rolvaag
decided it would be futile
to present either a new budp-

t program.
"The challenges which lie
ahead are substantial indeed,"
the new governor concedes.
He gets few arguments on
' that low-keyed appraisal.
The Minnesota recount bal
j tic was one of four held aft
i er the Nov. 6 election to settle
a governor s race. In Maine,
Massachusetts and Rhode Is
land the issues were settled
within a few weeks.
In South Dakota's senate
race. Democrat George Mc
Govcrn won by 516 votes in
a county-by-county canvass
late last year.
Verdict Late
But in Minnesota, the ver
dict wasn't known until late
March and then the margin
was only 71000 of 1 per
cent of the total of 2.25 mil
lion votes.
The recount was "the most

homes arc easier to clean
and keep clean, and easier to
work, cook and serve in, be
cause the nation's builders
are designing and equipping
them with the homemakers'
needs in mind.
This is especially important
today, with family life and
activities centering closely
around the home. Television
and the expense of outside
entertainment are encourag
ing families to spend more
and more time at home and
to do more home entertain
ing. Ordinarily, this would
make housekeeping more dif
ficult. Due to built-in, time
and labor-saving conveniences
the opposite is true.
Ltss Cleaning
Air conditioning is becom
ing a common feature in
homes. Not only does it keep
the house at a comfortable
temperature, but it makes
for less cleaning by filtering
air before circulating it in
the room.
Kitchen ventilators are
now being installed which
completely change stale kitch
en air in 3 minutes, insuring
mosphcre in which lo work.
These units can operate on
less current than a 50-watt
bulb.
Builders are incorporating
new, easy-to-clcan windows
which eliminate the bulky,
drafty sashweight boxes that
admit large amounts of dirt
into the house.
Single - story, basemenllcss
construction removes tiring
stairs from the house; interi
ors arc decorated with new,
easily washable paints; kitch
en surfaces are finished with
stainproof, non-marring plas
tic. New types of flooring or
iginates no dust, thus keep
ing houses cleaner. At the
same time, tests show these
new materials are less fa
tiguing than the older types
of flooring for the homemaker
In the kitchen, where the
homemaker spends a good
part of her day. a housekeep
ing revolution is afoot. New
fixtures and appliances elim
inate back - bending, saves
steps, and cut minutes and
hours from performance time
for various chores.
Eye-level ovens and right
height cook surfaces which
make stooping unnecessary
are built right into kitchen
cabinets.
Time-consuming and tiring
hunting and reaching for pots
and pans is avoided by stor
ing them on wail racks or in
special storage cabinets with
pull-out shelves or gliding
holders.

cd," proclaimed a happy Rol
vaag aide. All voting ma
chines had been checked and
all paper ballots recounted.
About 90,000 ballots were
disputed during the recount.
Attorneys for the two sides
agreed on most. But about 1.
500 still had to be decided
in a trial before a panel of
three district judges appoint
ed by the state supreme court.
The only comparable re
count cases. Rolvaag aide Ron
Stinnett said, were the Michi
gan governor recounts in
1950 and 1952 when Republi
cans unsuccessfully challeng
ed the election of Gov. G.
Mcnnen Williams.
The Minnesota recount
might have lasted even long
er than it did except that rep
resentatives of the two con
tenders worked up to 18 hours
a day getting mountains of
material ready for the re
count trial.
Asked how long the recount
trial might have run if all
90,000 challenged ballots had
been dumped in front of the
judges, the attorneys just
shrugged their shoulders.

the home become increasingly
important. Whether remodel
ing the house where your
children were raised or a
smaller one where space is at
a premium, one new addition
that will case the homcmak
er's work load is a convenient
ly placed laundry center.
An ideal plan for older
couples has been designed for
the Maytag Home Laundry
idea Center by Florida archi
tect Theodore Andrew, AIA.
Everything is compactly ar
ranged to lighten laundry
chores so that mother also can
enjoy dad's new-found free
hours.
Wabher-Dryer
The central feature of this
design is a combination wash
er dryer raised 18 inches
above the floor - high enough
to reduce stooping, yet low
enough so controls arc within
easy reach. A washer-dryer
combination was selected to
eliminate the necessity of lift
ing heavy wet loads from
washer lo dryer.
Shelves overhead are handy
for storing detergents, bleach
es and other laundry aids so
they are out-of-rcach of in
quisitve small grandchildren.
Space below the washer can
be used for out-nf-season
clothes or other things not
used frequently.
Further step - savers arc
two-way sorting bins that
open into the hall and are
convenient to bed rooms and
bath, as well as to the laundry
area. A work counter across
the top of the bins, backed by
perforated wallboard. pro
vides space for folding, mend
ing and general sewing proj
ects. Ironing Board
A pull - down ironing board
which can be Mored away
'quickly and easily, is located
i next to the washer. Also in
' eluded in the plan is a linen
cupboard, open storage
shelves and a full-length clos
et for hanging ironed clothes.
When not in use, the entire
work area can be closed off
. with a folding door.
This design suggests plac
ing the laundry center next to
; the kitchen, thus eliminating
I the need for a separate sink
