Wtuihington lUPll A recent
visitor to the White House
asked President Kennedy to
identify the subject of an oil
portrait hanging in the Blue
Room. Kennedy studied it
for some time and then re
plied, "I don't know. Those
things have been changed so
much."
Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy
did not strike the match that
ignited the cultural explosion
in the United States, but she
has been so active in promot
ing it that sometimes even
her husband can't keep up
with her. The nation is fairly
familiar with the changes she
has made in the White House
as a result of the televised
hour she conducted. But her
influence has been wider and
deeper than what has hap
pened at 1600 Pennsylvania
avc.
Start at Once
The Kennedys plumped for
culture as soon as they moved
in. The doors were thrown
open to long-hair music, bal
let and Shakespeare, which
represented a sharp change
from what went on during the
administration of Dwight D.
Eisenhower. So carried away

a comment on Eisenhower's
taste for popular music:
"In the executive mansion,
where Fred Waring and his
Pcnnsylvanians once played,
we now find Isaac Stern,
Pablo Casals, Stravinsky and
the Oxford Players. I think
we will not leave it to the So

Van Cliburns of the future."
Has Wide Influence
The inlluence of the White
House is so wide that what
ever the President or the
First Lady show an interest
in has a good chance of en
joying a boom. Mrs. Kennedy
has been active in the Nation
al Cultural Center here, she
attended the opening night of
the Lincoln Center in New
York and she received this
citation from New York Uni
versity: "Jacqueline Bouvier Ken
nedy, through her genuine
concern for the fine arts, has
served the people well. She
has enhanced the importance
of the White House as a na
tional artistic monument."
What she did in the While
House was to order an inven

Arouses Most Suspicion
Painting seems lo arouse
more suspicion among the
anti-culture group than any
oilier arl, and there arc al
ways stories going around
about some abstract artist
who won first prize with a
painting that was hanging up
side down.
Last year first prize in a
water color contest entered
by 12,000 high school students
on Hie theme of "What Amer
ica Means to Me" was award
ed to Sharon Whillaker of
Ravenna, Ohio. Her entry
showed a bleeding American
eagle lying on the ground,
and persons viewing it here
asked what it symbolized. No
body could explain it except
Sharon, who said the Ameri
can eagle was half dead be
cause of all the strife and
worry going on in the United
States.

How to reduce
wear and tear on your car
1. Anticipate stops and your brakes will
last longer. Except in case ol emergency,
there's really no need For Midden, btakc
slamming slops.
When you sec a stop coming, take your
foot ofl 1 he accelerator. Your engine w ill
slow you down and you'll save wear and
tear on your brakes,
note: A braking slop at 60 mph is
about four limes as tough on brake
linings as a slop at 30 mph.
2. Avoid humping the curb and save
tires three ways. Bumping into the curb
can: (1)1 hrow wheels out ol alignment.
I his can increase lire wear up to 50 per
cent. (2) Break tire cords and shorten
lire life. (3) Flatten tubeless tires by
breaking rim seals.
So be carel ul w hen you're parking. And
il you ever should hump the curb hard,
ask vour Shell dealer lo check your Front
tires and vour wheel alignment.
i. Increase pressure in rear tires when
hauling heavy loads. An extra lour or
live pounds ol air will help rear tires with
stand the extra weight. To make things
easier on springs, distribute the load
evenly throughout your car.
notei 1 he heavier die load, the more
power vour car needs lo move it, espe
cially uphill. 1 CI', one ol Super
Shells ll winking ingredients, helps
Super Shell give vou power when
you really need ii lor heavy jobs.
4. Don't park in trout of your house
then drive into the garage later on.
When you stall a cold engine, moisture
condenses inside. I his moisture turns to
Menu and goes out our exhaust once
yout engine heals up.
But on trips ol a lew hundred feet,
vour engine can i heat up. 1 he moisture
m.ivs inside can lead to increased wear
and sludge Formation.
So. i! vou posiubl) can. drive right into
the garage when you arrive home.
J. Make sure your fun belt isnt too loose
or too tight. Foo loose a bell can lead to
an overheated engine, a run-down kit

the center of the bell down firmly and
measure distance between stick and belt.
Correct distance should be about inch
lor most cars.
6. Ask your Shell dealer to show you
the heat control valve on vour exhaust
manifold and to li it il it sticks. If the
heat control valve doesn't move freely, a
number ol bad things can happen in
cluding burned v alv es, loss ol power and
rough running.
Once you know where il is. vou can
easily check the valve yourself by push
ing it down with a pencil or screwdriver.
Just make sure your engine's cold so you
don't burn yourself.
7. Treat your car to a regular check-up.
All cars, even the brand-new- ones, need
periodic inspection to catch small trou
bles before they cause big damage.
So, ask your Shell dealer lo put vour
car on his lilt soon and take a look. Thai's
the best nay to spot leaking brake fluid,
a loose connection, or anything else that
needs fixing.
Your Shell dealer w ill give vour car a
