Mets Almost Win One, But j
Lose on Ninth Inning Homer
By TIM MORIARTY
Tracy Stallard will always
be remembered as the pitcher
who served home run No. 61
to Roger Maris in 1961.
The 6 - foot - 7 Virginian,
though, may find it harder to
forget the gopher ball he
tossed to Lee Maye of the Mil

Stallard was only one strike
away from nailing down the
New York Mets' first victory
of the year when Maye lined
a two - run homer over the
right field fence at Milwaukee
to give the Braves a 4-3 tri
umph in Monday's only major
league game.
It was the sixth straight de
feat for the Mets, who didn't
gain their first victory last
season until their 10th game.
Stallard was so stunned that

Qualifying for City of
Roses Pro-Am Bowling
Gets Under Way Today
Qualifying for the largest
pro-amateur event in the his
tory of the Professional Bowl
ers association began today at
43 bowling centers through
out Oregon.
State keglers will be shoot
inging for a total of 300 berths
in the $7,500 City of Roses
Open Pro - Amateur tourna
ment scheduled for 20th Cen
tury Lanes in Portland on
Sept. 19.
Prize-fund-wise and entry-list-wise
this pro-am is the
biggest of all but tournament
sponsors are hoping that the
record of 8,000 qualifying en
tries in the PBA pro-am, set
in Oklahoma City earlier this
year, will also be topped by
the September 10 qualifying
deadline.
On Sept. 19. the 300 bowl
ers who qualify for the pro
am will be paired with the
PBA stars, such as Don Car
ter and Dick Weber, in a dou
bles competition for the prize
loot.
During the qualifying and
in the pro-am itself all local
bowlers will use a handicap
i of 100 per cent of 200, with
no pin limit, which makes
this affair quite attractive for
j the average kegler. The pro
fessionals will win none of
the 57,500 prize money in the
pro-amateur. All the dough
j will be taken home by Oregon
amateur bowlers.
The amateurs will be pair
ed with the professionals,
