COSTLY FIRE Firemen seek to control a fire in a Los
Angeles tire company plant, which was followed by an ex
plosion. Damage was estimated to be in excess of half a
million dollars. There were 120 men from 22 fire depart
ment units who battled the flames for 20 minutes before
gaining control. (UPI)

Ashland - Carl Otis Scars,
74. of 911 Harmony lane, Ash
land, died Wednesday at his
residence.
He was born Feb. 21, 1889,
in Oakley, Kans., and moved
to Ashland from Colorado in
1937. He was married to
Laura Shaffer in Burlington,
Colo., in October, 1913.
Mr. Sears was a member of
the Ashland Elks lodge.
He is survived by his wife
and two sons, Robert Sears,
Ashland, and Don Sears, Seat
tle; and by one daughter,
Carla Scars, Ashland. Also
surviving are four sisters
Mrs. Grace Riedel. Los An
geles; Mrs. Gladys Riedel, San
Francisco; Mrs. Alice Lewis,
Sac City, Iowa, and Mrs.
Frances Goodman, LaHabra,
Calif., and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be
held Friday at 10:30 a.m. in
Litwiller's Mountain View
chapel. The Rev. Duanc Al
vord and the Ashland Elks
will officiate. Interment will
be in Rest Haven mausoleum.
Other survivors include a
daughter, Mrs. Elouise Vet
kos, Eagle Point; his mother,
Mrs. Flora Thigpcn, Colum
bus, Ga.; a sister, Mrs. Blanch
Hopkins, Columbus, Ga. a
brother. Manning Ferguson,
Tampa, Fla.; four grandchil
dren, and several nieces and
nephews.
Casket bearers will include
Warren Long, Chief Ed
Hawkins, Horace Webster,
Gerald Reed, Stephen Udell,
and Thomas Winn.
Four Businesses Entered in Talent
Talent-Four business estab
lishments here were broken
into Wednesday night or
Thursday morning. The en
tries were discovered about
7 o'clock this morning.
They were the Talent Feed
Store, Valley Locker and Gro
cery, the Talent Club and
the Talent Shell station.
Heaviest losses were report
ed by the Valley Locker and
Grocery from which cigars,
two radios, meat valued at
S25, men's gloves, cigarettes,
beer, wine and chewing to
bacco were taken.
At the Talent club, which
was also entered by the front
door, all coin machines were
broken into and cigars stolen.
An attempt was made to en
ter the safe, which was badly
damaged. The amount of mon
ey removed from the coin
machines was not reported.
Glass doors at the Shell
station were broken and the
doors at the feed store. No
other losses were reported by
either place.
Talent police and the Jack
son county sheriff's depart
ment were still investigating
the entries this morning.

ments. Mr. Ferguson was born
Nov. 14, 1918, in Topcka,
Kans,. and had lived in south
ern Oregon for the past five
months. He was a veteran of
service in the U. S. Navy dur
inng World War II.
He was married Oct. 22,
1947. in Albuquerque, N.M.,
to Ruth Irene Eden, who survives.

Plans for Reunion
Of Alumni Noted
Ashland Program plans
tor the biennial reunion of
the Old Timers branch of the
Southern Oregon college
alumni association have been
announced by Dale Truax,
alumni secretary.
After a scries of meetings
attended by officers of the or
ganization, which consist! ot
those who attended the old
Ashland State Normal school
prior to 1910. the reunion was
scheduled for June 7-9.
Beginning with a reception
at the home of Dr. Elmo N.
Stevenson, college president,
Friday evening, the week end
will fcaure a Saturday morn
ing breakfast, registration
and viewing of old-time pic
tures, visiting session, a
luncheon meeting, tours of
the campus, a refreshment
hour it Ashland's Lithia
park, business meetings, and
a dinner banquet at which
President Stevenson will ad
dress the group. '
Sunday morning, for those
who stay over, there will be
a no-host breakfast at the
Mark Antony hotel, Truax re
