Oregon Beef Council Is
Concerned Over New Laws

This will not only avoid
the chance of a lapsed policy,
Novotny pointed out, but also
will save the veteran the time
and expense of drawing a
check or money order and
mailing it to his VA insur
ance office.
Veterans who are drawing
retirement pay can request
the branch of the service with
which they are connected to
make out an allotment from
their retirement pay to cover
their GI insurance premium
payment. This, too, saves time
and expense and guards
against a lapsed policy.

Internal Revenue Service, the
Oregon Beef Council is con
tributing Oregon's share of
the financing to the National
Livestock Tax committee
where the Oregon Cattlemen's
association maintains a mem
bership. Stanley emphasized
the importance and necessity
of this type of financial pro
gram in order to protect the
interests of the livestock in
dustry.
Spokesmen for the National
Livestock Tax committee ap
pearing before a Congression
al committee agreed with a
plan to plug up the loop holes
in the tax law but do not
want to lose the privilege for
legitimate livestock operators.
An attorney for the Live
stock Tax committee express
ed the views of the cattlemen
of Oregon when he stated,
"We feel that If the Treasury
will come up with a specific
proposal that cracks down on
the tax gimmick, but does not
hurt the traditional and legiti
mate operator, including those
with outside income, we
would be willing to accept it.
If, however, it hurts the long
time bona fide rancher, we
would oppose it."
