Medford high took over
lone top position in the South
ern Oregon conference base
ball standings yesterday with
a 5 to 0 decision ovr Crater
on the Medford diamond.
Black Tornado pitcher Jack
Forde went the seven-inning
route and held the Comets to
one hit. He came within one
out of a no-hitter. Crater's
Mike Glines spoiled it for
him with a smash to deep
shortstop with two out in the
seventh frame.
Medford collected three
runs in the third canto on
four hits and two in the sixth
on just one safe smack.
Victory gave the Medford's
3-0 league standing. Crater is
3-2. The two clubs were to
collide here again this after
noon. The weather prevented
a doublcheader between Kla
maths Falls and Grants Pass
yesterday. The action was re
scheduled for this afternoon
but snow was falling this
morning at Klamath Falls and
it appeared unlikely that the
games would be played.
Larry Pepper Injured
Crater lost starting pitch
er Larry Pepper in the bot
tom of the third inning yes
terday. Dick Deffley, Med
ford's leadoff hitter wham
med a sizzler to the mound.
The ball struck Pepper near
the back of the foot. Comet
Coach Bill Piche said he con
sidered Deffley's blow and
Pepper's injury the turning
point ofthe game.
Deffley, Don Anderson
and Mike Barnes each got two
hits for the Tornado, Dan
Miles doubled.
Deffley's wallop to the
mound. Miles' two-baser, An
derson's iniield single and
Barnes' safety to right field
were combvned in the third
canto with a base on balls
with Anderson bringing home
one run and Barnes knocking
in two.
Runs in the sixth were on
Mike Neathamer's single to
center fielcr, a walk, a hit bat
ter, a fielder's option and a
groundout. Runs crossed on
Anderson's fielder's choice
rap and on Couch's ground
out. A double play eventually
resulted from Couch's rap
with Anderson being tagged
in a rundown. It was one of
two double kills for the Comets.
Forde struck out four, walk
ed three and hit two batters.
His hill chore was eased by
the fact that 10 outs were
on flyballs which cut down
his pitching time.
Pepper permitted two hits
in his two innings plus on
the slab. He fanned five and
walked one and was responsi
ble for one run. Mason allow
ed six hits and four runs,
struck out two, walked four
and hit one.
