In Ashland Holds
75th Anniversary
Ashland - Celebration of
the 75th anniversary of the
First Congregational church
(United Church of Christ) was
marked by day-long services
March 24 when members and
former members and pastors
returned to Ashland for the
event.
Dr. Adelbert J. Buttrey.
Oregon Congregational con
ference minister from Port
land, was the speaker at the
morning worship hour. He
reviewed the history of the
Ashland church since its or
ganization March 25, 188S.
It is now the tenth oldest
Congregational church in the
state. Greetings were read
from Dr. Ben M. Herbster,
president of the Unite)
Church of Christ, New York;
the Rev. Fred Plocher, for
mer pastor who now Is at
Green River, Wyo., and from
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shephard,
missionaries In Syria, who
were commissioned In the
Ashland church.
During the after-service fel
lowship hour Miss Margaret
Ramsey was honored for hav
ing served as church organist
or almost 30 years. On behalf
oi tne congregation Miss Ram
sey was presented with a gift
oi money.
Also given recognition was
Henry C. Galcy. whose af
filiation with the Ashland
congregational church began
In his boyhood. He now holds
l n e record of being its old
est member.
A supper was served in the
evening followed by a vesper
hour at which the Rev. Arma

unscheduled feature of the
evening was a surprise visit
from the former minister,
Army Chaplain Edward Wulf
ekuehler and his family.
Organised in lilt
The records show that 18
families met in 1888 to organ
ize the Congregational church
under the guidance of Dr.
G. H. Atkinson, pastor of the
Oregon City Congregational
church, following a series of
meetings the previous fall.
Several months earlier four
lots had been purchased on
Main and Fourth sts.
Mrs. C. L. VanVleck was
elected chairman ol the first
Congregational "society" and

ing. The newly organised

Webster, Plymouth, Wis., to
become Its first pastor.
A New England type church
was erected the following
year and served the congrega
tion until 1928 when the
present building on Siskiyou
blvd. was constructed. Thirty
one ministers have served
during the 75-year period.
The Rev. Paul E. Olte came
to Ashland last fall.
One of the features of the
Congregational church build
ing is a large carved bas re
lief on the boulevard outside
wall In memory of Mrs. Joyce
Becson. It was created by
Lcroy Sctzlol and dedicated
in 1956.

dow is for two re-entry ve
hicles which later this year
will be launched and then
rammed back through the at
mospherc at speeds of about
25,000 miles per hour, with
the purpose of studying the
effects of re-entry tempera
lures. Design of the vehicles calls
for Installation of a window
no more than one-half Inch In
diameter, ant) some one-filth
of an Inch thick. A special in
strument, a radiometer, will
be located behind this tiny
porthole to record the inten
sity of the glowing atmos
pheric gas molecules. No glass
existing today. RAC engineers
say. has the necessary optical
qualities and can withstand
auch white-hot heat without
melting.
