GAMBLERS ANONYMOUS
I have been reading about
an organization called "Gam
blers Anonymous," which in
1837 was
started in Los
A n g c les by
Jim W. The
org anizalion
now has 800
converts left,
out of 7,000
troubled men
and women
who started
out with the
intention of putting an end
to their terrible curse of
gambling.
The address of the society
is P.O. Box 17173, Los Angc
les 17. Calif., or P. O. Box
1408 in New York City. Lo
cal chapters arc to be found
in a number of cities. The
society is patterned alter the
successful Alcoholics Anony
mouf,
Few people who have not
had to deal with an invcieraic
gambler can imagine what a
curse the tendency can be.
One of my friends, a big busi
nessman in Nevada, told me
about one of his best employ
ees - an intelligent and able
worker - who every time he
got his pay check went
straight to one of the gam-
blinc halls, and stayed mere
until he hadn't a cent loft.
As a result, my friend had
to insist that he be allowed to
pay some of the man's salary
to the fellow's wife to pay
the rent and to buy food and
clothes for the children. The
remarkable thing was that the
employee, who knew that he
always come out of the gam
bling place broke, just could
not stay out of the "uiud
when he had a dollar in his
pocket.
Devastating Toll
According to Stanley rranK,
who wrote an article on Gam
blers Anonymous, the toll in
emotional bankruptcy among
confirmed gamblers is devas
tating. About a thud of the
people who come to Gamblers
Anonymous have been di
vorced, and most of the re-

ing when it is the wife who
blows every cent that should
go for food for her children.
As one woman said, "I have

curse has been on me. My
gambling drove my wife into
a mental institution."
As Jim W. says about Gam
blers Anonymous, "We suc
ceed only with people who
have hit rock bottom in mis
ery and degradation." The
others who still have some
money left "really don't want
to stop gambling "
Apparently at times gam
bling is defnitcly a form of
psychosis, and the victim goes
to a psychiatrist to see if
anything can be done to work
a cure. Mr. Frank tells of a
woman of 45 who had been
addicted to narcotics, alcohol,
obesity, nymphomania and
gambling. She said that of all
these addictions, gambling
was the hardest to lick.
She managed to quit the
booze, the dope, the over-1
eating, and the running!
around with men after her
divorce, but gambling she j
couldn't slop "All I had on!
my mind was horses."
Played for 14 Hours
Mr. Frank also tells of a j
woman who. a week after
she was delivered of a baby
boy by ccsarian section, play
ed the slot machines for 14
consecutive hours until she :
had a hemorrhage.
Often in my long life as a
physician, I have noticed that
any man who starts taking
dope, or who takes barbitur
ates by the handful, is a chain
smoker and perhaps an alco-,
holic. The trouble with peo
ple of this type is that in
many ways they arc not quite
sane; they arc undisciplined.
and they won't bother lo get I
needed sleep.
Their urge to do crazy
things is so strong lhat often
DO amount of effort on their
part can save them from their
folly. As with other people
of this type, it is useless to
argue with a gambler, or to
beg him to reform. The only
man who can save him is
himself, and he must very
much want to save himself.

Representative
Says Legislature
Is Hard Working
"Gov. Mark Hatfield has a
heavy case of Potomac fever,"
State Representative James
Redden (D-Jackson) charged
here Saturday night, address
ing the Democratic Social
club.
That is why he is constant
ly attacking the legislature,"
the Mcdford lawyer maintained.
Hcdden then defended the
legislature, reviewing the
hours devoted by members to
committee assignments-, where
all the heavy work is done.
It is a hard working leg
islature," Redden declared.
"The members of the press,
who follow us around, are be
ginning to come lo the legis
lature's defens-c."
Tile Jackson county mem
ber of the House then con
tended that the type of work
tlic legislators are doing this
year docs nol make colorful
news because the members
are not fighting with each
other and they are not carry
ing their fights to the floor
of the House. They are doing
their work in COmmltlCei,
where il should be done, he
insistid
"The governor It feuding
and the legislators are work
ing," he summed up his stand
on the much discussed sub
ject. Good Accomplished
Referring to much legisla
tion that doesn't pass. Redden
jaid many times a great deal
li accomplished by the Intro
duction of legislation. To
prove this contention, he re
ferred to legislation which
would have changed the re
sponsibilities of county sher
iffs, moving some services to
state police. This bill has al
ready caused tile state sheriffs
to take a belter look at their
operations and will undoubt
edly bring about some needed
reforms.
In the same category, Itci
den placed the legislation call
ing for an Investigation of
power company rates. This
bill, and Redden was one of
ihe sponsors, brought a "Pa
cific Power and Light rate
reduction in a few days." he
stated
Redden was introduced to:

Scanneii also announced
