ment, there is a continuing
need to increase the quality
of programs in this vital area.

by Dr. Benjamin Spock, writ
ten, as it is, by a wise psy
chiatrist. It is excellent.
Another wise writer is
Mrs. Sidonie Matsner Gruen
berg, who for a life-time has
been a student of children
and their problems. Some
years ago, she edited the "En
cyclopedia of Child Care and
Guidance" (Doubleday) which
then sold over a million
copies. Now she has brought
out a revised edition. As I
look through it, I am delight
ed to find so much informa
tion and so much good sen
sible help, I am sure that
another million mothers will
be very happy to get the wise
advice that Mrs. Gruenberg
and her sub-editors give.
Infectioui Mononucleosis
So far, we physicians
haven't had much in the way
of treatment for infectious
mononucleosis. As many peo
ple know, this is an illness
which often begins with
sore throat and some fever
and enlarged lymph nodes in
the neck. The person is us
ually a youngster, maybe In
college. Often, the worst
symptoms calm down In two
or three weeks, but fatigue
may remain for six months or
so. Unfortunately, we don't
know the cause of the disease
Now I read that in a num
ber of cases the drug chloro-
told me that for years it has
worked well for them.
As to its safety, all I can
say is that years ago, studies
of animals showed that if it is
given steadily for months, a
tiny amount of it goes
through the intestinal wall
and is deposited in the liver
and in the lymph nodes that
lie alongside of the gut. But
no evidence was obtained to
show that these small deposits
of the oil did any harm. I
have never seen a person who
said he had been injured by
a long-continued use of the
oil, and hence, so far as I
know, it is safe. If it should
start to give trouble, its use
should be stopped for a few
months, while some other lax
ative is used.
Colon distress seems to be
related to constipation. You'll
find much more help on this
subject in Dr. Alvarez' book
