Phoenix Couple 'Adopts' 1 Pinafore of Huck River Boot Renovated As Community Project

which he sells. Maria was in
the first grade when her
mother became il! and had to
quit school.

Vargas, 9, a Colombian girl,
who lives in Bogota.
Maria Ines is the second
oldest in a family of five
girls. After the family fled
from their native province
due to political violence, the
mother died.
Due to the influ- of people
into Bogota there is not
enough work for all. so Ma
ria's father is a peddler of
candy. He makes about 70
cents a day.

da, 12; Sicchernarda, 7; Ger
trudis, 5, and Francisca. 2.
Due to poverty, none of the
girls are in school. They live
in a house with two other
families. The Vargas family
rents a room which is 12 by
61-.' feet. Its floor is of rough
boards and the walls are of
brick, plaster, bamboo and
papers. The kitchen, which is
shared with the other fami
lies, has an earth floor.

Repairs Made e
The first step was to cneck
the htRl by drilling holes and
some steel plates were re
placed. Rotted wood was strip
ped away from stem to stern
and decks, wallboards, ceil
ings, stairways and window
sashes repaired.
Bates designed the fancy
grill work installed around
the top of the pilot house and
atop the smoke stacks that
were lengthened and pro
