SL Cardinals Will
Go as Far as Their
Hurling Takes Them
(Thii is tht 15th of 20 dis
pltch on ihe 1963 prospects
of the major league baseball
teams.)
Br LEO H. PETERSEN
UPI Sports Editor
St. Petersburg, Fla. - (UPD -Manager
Johnny Keane says
he isn't trying to fool anyone
about the 1963 prospects of
the St. Louis Cardinals.
"Last year, at this time,"
he recalls, "1 said we could
fool 'em all and win the pen
nant. I honestly believed it. I
was fooled. So I'm through
making predictions which
may turn out foolish."
About all he will say about
the coming season is that "We
will go as far as our pitching
carries us." That's about as
safe and sane a prediction as
a manager can make.
He will admit his club has
power, perhaps as much as
any in the league, with the ad
dition of George Altman from
the Cubs. And that "we think
we have solved our shortstop
problem." They now have
Dick Groat of the Pirates.
To get these two men, how
ever, the Cardinals sacrificed
pitching. "Sure, we gambled,"
Keane declares. "But what
else can you do when you feel
you have a good chance of
winning and then finish
sixth?"
The Cards gave up pitchers
Larry Jackson, Lindy McDan
lel and Don Cardwell to get
Altman and Groat.
"Perhaps we solved one
problem and created another,"
Keane points out. "We'll just
have to wait and see."
Except for pitching, the
Cardinals do not stack up too
badly.
Could be they have every
thing else it takes.
There is power in Ken Boy
er at third, Bill White at first,
Altman and the amazing Stafl
Musial in the outfield and per
haps with catcher Gene Oli
ver. They have one of the best
defensive center fielders in
Curt Flood, who last season
also started coming along
with the bat. There's also
Minnie Minoso, a power hitter
who spent most of last season
on the bench with injuries.
Altman, who hit .318 with
the Cubs with 22 home runs
and 74 runs batted in, will
play right field with Flood in
center. Flood batted .29 vith
12 homers ana 70 RBIs. Sus
11, although 42, hit .330 with
19 HRs and 82 RBIs. He will
he in left and seems like he
will go on forever. But there
i Minoso to back him up
along with Charlie Jeanes asted
a rookie, Leon Duke Cirinsl.

raster but despite hie tasttint.
average of .243 with Jackson
ville last season, he hit 20 out
of the park and knocked is 74
ruri. He has bei hitting
in exhibition games aati couU
irk.
Thera doatn't figure to
any infield problems nle
one of the regulars should be
hurt.
Byer not only can hit but
also can field. He had 24 HRs
last year with 98 RBIs on his
average of .291. White hit .324
with 20 HRs and 102 RBIs.
There's no fioubt Groat has
slowed down at short, but
there are few smarter posi
tioning players in the game
and he wields a pretty good
bat, for average if not for dis
tance. At second it will be Julian
Javier, a fine glove man, who
hit only .263, but Keane
thinks he will do better than
that.
For infield reserves, the
Cardinals may be thin with
holdover Maxvill, a glove
man who can't hit, and Jerry
Buchek, who hasn't proved to
make it either way.
Keane is happy the way Ol
iver came on last season when
he hit 10 of his 14 home runs
in the last month. His 14th
beat the Dodgers in the final
game of the season to force
a pennant playoff, which the
Giants won from Los Angeles.
Carl Sawatski, a fine pinch
hitter, wil lbe back of him
with possibly Tom McCarver
the third man.
Now the big question mark
pitching. There's Bob Gibson (15-13),
whom many believe could be
one of the best; Ernie Broglio
(12-9) and Ray Washburn (also
12-9) to anchor the staff as
starters. Keane is hopeful that
Ron Taylor, 2-2 with Cleve
land last season, will be the
fourth starter.
Then there are Curt Sim
mons (10-1U), BOODy snamz
(6-4), Diomedes Olivo (5-1)
with the Pirates, Bob Duliba
(2-0), Ed Bauta (1-0), and Ray
Sadecki, the Cardinals Peck's
bad boy of 1962.
Maybe the Cardinals have
it, but it would fool a lot of
people if they go all the way
including their skipper,
Keane.
Giants Finally
Win One; Juan
Marichal Sparkles
By DICK JOYCE
UPI Sporti Writer
Juan Marichal and Tom
H a 1 i e r, batterymates who
played important roles in the
San Francisco Giants' drive
to the 1962 National League
pennant, have boosted Al
Dark's team back into the
victory column and it's a
shame the Giant manager
wasn't around to see it.
Dark was traveling to New
York Monday to receive a
sportsmanship award when
the Giants broke a six-game
losing streak with a 4-3 vic
tory over the Cleveland In
dians at Santa Barbara, Calif.
The Giants scored all their
runs in the fourth inning, cli
maxed by Haller's two-run
homer.
Dark's eyes would have
sparkled at the performance
of the high-kicking Marichal,
who turned in disappointing
efforts in two previous spring
training appearances. Mari
chal, an 18-game winner last
season, allowed only two hits
and one run in six innings
and struck out nine Inciaaas.
The Giants collected only
six hits - three of thetn by
Willie Mays, who led off the
fourth inning with a single.
Then Orlando Cepeda dou
bled, Felipe Alou tripled and
Haller homered off Joe Schaf-
fernoth.
Billy Pierce came on in the
seventh inning and gave up a
two-run homer to rookie Bob
Lipski of the Indians.

Tfildcats captured the night

Veteran pitchers Robin
Roberts and Bob Friend
showed they're in mid-season
form by firing four-hitters
Monday. Although not going
the full route, Joey Jay, Bill
Stafford and Bob Shaw all
turned in strong pitching per
formances. Roberts, who hardly threw
a ball in spring training last
season before being cut by the
New York Yankees, pitched
the Baltimore Orioles to a
6-1 victory over the Los An

rapped out 11 hits, including

The Montreal Canadiens, al
though facing elimination in
the National Hockey league
playoffs, are favored to de
feat the Toronto Maple Leafs
tonight in the fourth game of
their rest-of-seven semifinal
series.
The oddsmakers apparently
are basing their prediction on
the law of average and hock
ey's long respected home-ice
advantage, for the Canadiens
haven't looked like champions
in the series thus far.
Coach Toe Blake's once
mighty Flying Frenchmen
dropped the first three games,
including a 2-0 shutout at
Montreal last Saturday night,
so another loss tonight will
send them packing.

St. Petersburg, Fla. - (UPI -
There's a "gentlemen's agree
ment" clause in the sale of
Duke Snider to the New York
Mets, it was learned today.
When the straight cash deal
was announced Monday night,
it was estimated the Mets paid
the Los Angeles Dodgers $40,
000 for the 36-year-old out
fielder, who was known as
the "Duke of Flatbush" dur-
ing his salad days in Brook
lyn. However, only about $30,-
000 passed hands in the trans
action. The Doagers, though,
have been promised additional
money if Snider regains some
of his past slugging form with
the Mets.
"If Snider is able to do any
kind of a Job for us, we'll give
the Dodgers more money at
the end of the season," said
clwh President George Weiss.

Roger Marls probably has

Surprise! Comfort has come to compacts. Dodge Dart takes on a

things like a new 5-year50,0O0-mile warranty. Little wonder,
Dart's the success of '63. This year's sales are up 115 over our
